The city fracs Well 103 eighteen miles northeast of Medicine Hat to boost daily gas from 1.3 million to over 15 million cubic feet. If successful next Monday, fractured wells could end new-city drilling and cut costs, doubling productivity at 54 wells. City engineers hail the move as a bonanza following Britalta Petroleum's record gas well.
Britalta announces a gas well described as probably the largest at similar depth worldwide, showing a rise of over 500 percent versus other area wells. With nine wells, the Calgary company meets its 20 well plan for a supply contract with Southern Saskatchewan and Medicine Hat. Well 103, drilled in 1958, produced 1,300,000 cu ft daily but city limits permit only 250,000. a heavy fracturing treatment aimed to unlock higher flow.
Vernon AP report says local bird hunter Standke ended his bid to rid Mount Vernon of about 10 000 starlings after a week of use of homemade clappers and chimes. The city had agreed to pay 4000 dollars and set a 30 day wait to confirm the birds did not return. Standke accused critics as nincompoops or damn fools.
A state of emergency was proclaimed in Formosa as Typhoon Joan approached the island. Winds reached up to 220 miles per hour, threatening coastal areas and infrastructure.
A 21-year-old sailor Lloyd Nilson stayed at the hospital to see his newborn son while his wife Clarice Nilson, also 21, gave birth. After becoming ill, he was wheeled into her room and then into surgery where Dr. William W. Wilkinson removed his appendix.

Dowell of Canada conducted fracturing of Well 103 under municipal contract. A nine man crew used 1500 hp engines to inject 59 barrels of water per minute with six pounds of sand per gallon, releasing about 20 tons of sand and 50 000 gallons of water over four to five hours. Supervisors were Joe Bristow and Jim Ross of Dowell Medicine Hat.
Mr. Ross notes well fracturing began in Canada about six years ago and his firm has fractured around 20 gas wells. At Medicine Hat, a well operation produced a dramatic geyser 110 feet high as sand and water blasted from the casing. After the blast, gas pressure rose and the crew continued operations, with expected production strides from Well 103.
Prime Minister Nehru told Parliament that India must defend its borders after Chinese forces seized parts of the northeast frontier agency south of Tibet. He ordered troop movements and direct Army control of the 35000 square mile agency while seeking negotiated settlement.
Errol Flynn arrived in Hollywood Friday with actress Beverly Radland and kissed his second wife Nora Eddington Haymes. The actor cited his duty to society and four children as the reason for marriage, as he also introduced their daughters Deidre 15 and Rory 13.

The Royal Commission backs Canadian oil for Canadians with an US outlet and outlines major industry players and their connections.
A government report discourages immediate action to build a 2020 mile pipeline to Montreal refineries. It says private firms might proceed only if foreign oil imports to Montreal are embargoed, with costs estimated at 370 to 415 million dollars and a national energy board review ongoing. The panel notes private enterprise alone is unlikely to fund the project soon.
Toronto based oil executives backed the Borden Commission's stance against building a West to Montreal oil pipeline now. Sun Oil's Wilburn T. Askew said pipeline oil cannot compete with tanker arrivals in Montreal. Cities Service's R. J. Hull supported using Canadian crude in Ontario to beat imports in Montreal. He noted spare refining could enable the shift, while Canadian crude could compete in Ontario but not Montreal. Hull saw no immediate rise in U S exports, citing tanker costs despite potential world market shifts. Westcoast's Frank McMahon added Montreal may need Middle East and Latin American oil, but it could supply the U S west and midwest.
