Reports from Jackson California say 47 to 48 miners were trapped since midnight in the Argonaut mine as a fierce fire roared through levels from 800 to 2400 feet. Families and workers held an all night vigil hoping for survivors while rescuers battled flames and calculated possible escape routes.
Robbers believed to be five men used a motor getaway after binding two clerks and blasting the inner vault door at the Union Bank on the Lethbridge Weyburn line.
