CNCP workers walk off in Canada wide strike
About 2 200 CNCP Telecommunications employees including Medicine Hat workers join a nationwide strike after the Canadian Association of Communications and Allied Workers rejected a second offer. The action disrupts banking data, airline reservations, train dispatch, police networks, and news services while CNCP says few services suspend.

Gas well project unveiled in Suffield block
Allan Coyle of The News Alberta Energy Company plans a 35 million dollar program to drill 300 natural gas wells in the Suffield block north of Medicine Hat with initial work starting soon and full completion aimed for spring 1985. Local contractors will be used where possible and the project is expected to boost employment and the oil and gas service sector.

Grass fire razes two Sask ranches near Sidewood
Alison Appelbe reports a grass fire that devastated two ranches near Sidewood Saskatchewan on Monday. An insurance agent described the scene as looking like the end of the world after visiting a charred property at Maple Creek.

Two fires east and west of Maple Creek driven by gusty winds damaged ranches near Piapot and Sidewood. A large blaze between Piapot and Tompkins destroyed a house barn shop and other buildings on the Olson property and burned cattle. a sizeable fire near Sidewood burned Bowie ranch facilities. RCMP say causes undetermined. 300 to 500 volunteers fought the blazes as Trans-Canada Highway closed briefly and smoke caused zero visibility.

Fire devastates Granum business district including grain elevator
A wind driven blaze ripped through Granum Alberta devastating a hotel a convenience store and a municipal shed along with a newly rebuilt grain elevator valued at about 1.5 million dollars. Fire crews from surrounding towns fought the flames as power lines and water supply were disrupted and investigators were called to probe the cause.

Tory spending plan costs and key fiscal year figures
