Berlin reports heavy bombings on Kent and Thames estuary as 15 defenders fall. RAF engages two formations of 18 and 21 bombers with multiple shootdowns and sea crashes. Night raids kill several, with London spared casualties. civilian areas suffer but homes are damaged.
Ottawa reports two German prisoners of war, Theodor Steyrer and Hans Kibart, escaped at dusk from an internment camp near Sudbury. They hid in an outhouse, slipped through a wire fence into heavy bush as guards fired. Earlier Aug 19, two others escaped from different camps but were recaptured.
The Royal Air Force attacked targets in Germany Italy and occupied France last night. Docks at Kiel Wilhelmshaven a transformer station near Frankfurt the Messerschmitt factory at Augsburg oil depots at Mannheim air dromes and Kieler areas were hit. In Italy Fiat works at Turin and Marelli magneto plant at Sesto San Giovanni were attacked. In France air depots near Bordeaux Paullac and Cherbourg were bombed. One RAF aircraft is missing.
British naval communique reports air raid on Port Said and Alexandria today. No damage or casualties recorded. Port Said guarded by British forces as control of the Suez Canal area tightens under military agreement with Egypt.
Italian-born Sudbury theatre owner R. T. Stevens pleaded guilty to charges under the Defence of Canada regulations and was fined 25 dollars plus costs.
Ottawa reports the permanent joint defence board will inspect eastern Canadian defence facilities as part of planning joint defence for the two nations. The board, opened its first session in Ottawa, adjourned to meet in Washington on Sept. 9. The inspection tour will include three US service members and two Canadians traveling by Royal Canadian Air Force planes, possibly reaching Newfoundland.
Five dollar War Savings Certificates will be the prizes at a Moose Carnival booth run by the Shriners for three days. Tickets cost a nominal sum per wheel spin, and each prize is a five dollar certificate. Proceeds from carnival games support war charities as the Moose aid Canada’s defence.
The Canadian Red Cross Society will begin a nationwide $5,000,000 fundraising appeal on Sept. 23. National chairman Norman Somerville said most of the previous campaign funds were used for emergency calls over the past year.
Premier Fumimaro Konoye outlined a plan to create a nationwide state structure to unite the energies of the state and people. He insisted it would not be a political party and aims to make 100,000,000 countrymen fulfill their duty as subjects of the throne.

The city learned late night of the death of Corey MacDonald at 764 Third Street aged 51. He suffered a heart attack shortly after midnight while at work. Survived by wife, niece Lois Giles, and sister Mrs. McNaughton.
The obituary notes Mr MacDonald born in Alma Nova Scotia on Oct 2 1882 and living in the city for 30 years. He spent 29 years in the paint business and remained active despite declining health until last evening. He has a sister in Alma and another in Toronto.
The Department of National War Services announced personnel for boards under national war services regulations. Canada is divided into 13 administrative divisions with divisions K M and N listed, naming chairmen, board members, and divisional registrars for Vancouver Regina and Edmonton areas.
British authorities suspend shipping clearances for French Indo China and recalled British vessels en route there. The reason was not provided. London reported 24 enemy aircraft destroyed in today’s air battles and a general air raid alarm sounded in the city as twilight faded. Budapest accused the Romanian air force of reconnaissance flights over Hungary and denied bombing a Romanian airport.
George N. Segar a longtime U S congressman since 1923 and dean of the New Jersey delegation died in Washington yesterday at age 71. He served decades in the House and was a prominent political figure in New Jersey.
Montreal reports nationals in Canada aged 20 to 36 will be called up next month for service in the Netherlands armed forces. Eligible individuals must meet criteria and respond to the notice.
Ottawa reports that Canada will concentrate its 83rd Division in the Maritime provinces from October 1 to 15. Col. J. L. Ralston announced the force will be fully equipped with motor transport field guns 18 pounders howitzers and Lewis or Bren machine guns. An artillery range is set near Tracadie New Brunswick with units to be stationed at training centres by December 15.
Prime Minister Churchill, in a letter to General de Gaulle, pledges to maintain economic stability of French overseas territories and foster trade while Britain pursues victory. He states aid will be extended to those rallying to the Allied cause and plans are being set to make assistance rapidly effective.

Washington dispatch notes Britain quietly plans 4000 25 ton medium tanks in U.S. orders and munitions totaling about 2 billion dollars. Britain expects allied help next years and foresees mass production of lighter tanks for empire fronts as aerial siege subsides.
Ottawa reports Charles Dunning former finance minister will chair the National Subscription for the second war loan. The appointment follows early press leaks and comes after J L Talay’s tenure in the first war loan.
