Police emergency units moved into a Vienna working-class district to disarm the Heimwehr militiamen after a short hand-to-hand clash. Major Emil Fey heads the Heimwehr in nominal command, with unclear approval for the police action.
In Edmonton 1480 residents attended a mass meeting requiring assessment notices for entry. They demanded a 50 mill tax rate, drastic expenditure cuts, and redistribution of taxation liability. They also called for a public investigation into city finances and questioned whether to accept a federal loan.
Taxpayers demand a public inquiry into city finances with optional provincial force. A private probe led by Thomas H. Bradshaw was defeated. Property owners bear 90 percent of expenditures. Tenants face new stigmas and a tax cut target. candidates must pledge a 50 mill or less rate. Federal loan of 500000 to be held until taxpayers decide its desirability.
Police in Niagara Falls New York searched the city for rioters after a violent clash on the east side injuring scores including three severely hurt. One man remained in critical condition as authorities urged residents to stay indoors.

In Philadelphia Eastern State Penitentiary a prisoner strike expanded to 1273 inmates, with 1400 refusing work and food at Graterford. In France 56 youths fled Belle Island reformatory near Lorient. six were recaptured.
Freeport Texas reports 75 to 80 mph winds and torrential rain as the gulf storm shifts from northeast to northwest. Telephone exchange building shakes slightly while most residents evacuate after warnings. In Houston reinforced coastline alerts note high tides and evacuations along Port Arthur to Galveston Island.
Four veteran alpinists including Don Munday Henry Hall and Hans Fuhrer failed to scale Waddington Mount also called Killer Mountain after a six week assault ending in Vancouver. Munday declared the main peak will never be climbed.

Calgary Aug 28. A bargaining session between the Alberta government and city representatives will meet early next week to decide how much the state will contribute toward direct relief for married unemployed men and their families. The meeting follows a long call between Acting Premier Hoadley and Mayor Davison.

Wallace Doyle Sharp Jr., eight, in Fort Payne Alabama, underwent surgery after his parents previously refused medical care. Dr. A W Ralls of Gadsden reported eight inches of bone scraped from the leg and drainage of pus. He said life chances look good unless infection weakened his system and that amputation should not be needed unless complications arise.
Melbourne reports the Australian cabinet considered British protests but decided to maintain the new import duties on Lancashire textiles. The move deepens the trade conflict, with London circles warning the Imperial accords may be jeopardized by the Australian duties.
In Denaron Virginia on August 28 police and post office inspectors trapped a band attempting a post office robbery. E W Austin Brambelton was shot as he fled after firing. Johnny Bernard Brambelton died from his wounds. John Crank alias Johnny Creekmore was wounded.
Lloydminster report says a would be robber demanded 1000 dollars with a wooden gun and note. Bank manager William Rowland struck with an ash tray and staff restrained the suspect Antony J. Otte, 29, who was held until police arrived after the failed holdup. Otte was found farming 12 miles north of town.
HALIFAX August 28 C P Many half digested ideas are brought forward by demagogues and political self seekers who by libellous propaganda inflame minds of people anxious due to unemployment and loss of spending power. C L Burton Toronto president of the Robert Simpson Company declared here at the Maritime Conference of Canadian Affairs. He warned responsible ministers have twisted truth to advance political fortunes while trusteeship of the people is ignored. He said abuses creep in with economic trouble and that large scale operations require hundreds or thousands of workers making ruthless methods unlikely. Continued on page five.
Two boys attempted to mail a live cat into a mailbox in Washington. The animal cried out, drawing a crowd and a squad of police. After officers were scratched, a postal worker used a key to open the slot and the cat escaped back to its alley.
