Fire swept the steamship Imperator, forcing passengers and crew to form lines to reach safety. Second Officer Gobrecht died in the disaster, while others escaped with minor injuries as authorities coordinate rescue and investigation.

The steamship Imperator the largest vessel afloat was swept by fire at her Hoboken dock with 1131 steerage passengers aboard. Mrs Meyers mother of Roy Meyers a farmer west of the city fell from the Crow train at full speed near Seven Persons while returning to California. She fractured a collar bone and several ribs but is not believed to be fatally injured and should resume travel in a few weeks.

Vancouver August 28 Henry Wagner known as the Flying Dutchman faced his execution with nerve and calm walking unaided to the scaffold before being swung to death in the morning.
William Himsworth is named deputy minister of Inland Revenue replacing the retired W J Gerald. He has served as acting deputy for two years. Joseph A Vincent becomes secretary and assistant deputy minister at 3300 dollars salary. Vincent was the unfavored opponent of Hon Charles Murphy in the last federal election in Russell county.
A young woman with a three month old baby sits at the doorway to the police court as Mrs. Ida L. Allen, held for complicity in her husband’s crimes. Authorities say she and Charles Allen used the name Lea to run a restaurant and defraud merchants of over 300 dollars. Her bank account balance of 445 dollars was drawn out last Saturday. Remanded for a week to secure Charles Allen’s attendance, with bail set at 1000 dollars. Her other two children are in another’s care.
William Travers Jerome leading New York case arrives in Quebec at midnight to seek Premier Gouin and attorney general aid in returning Harry K. Thaw to Mattewan asylum. Accompanied by S. W. Jacobs and others, Jerome plans interviews on the legal action at Sherbrooke. Louis St Laurent counters by rushing to Quebec to block Jerome and Kennedy. Thaw busy with letters and telegrams.

The Hague August 28 The grand cross of the Order of Orange Nassau was conferred on Andrew Carnegie by Queen Wilhelmina in honor of the palace of peace inauguration. Abraham Peter Cornelis Van Cleef Beck, president of the Carnegie Foundation, received a similar decoration with minor distinctions for others linked to the palace. Carnegie arrived and will stay at the U S minister's residence.
Four trains carrying about 4 000 harvesters arrived in Winnipeg from the east after blasting held up movement on the Schrieber division of the CPR. Most workers were sent west to the three provinces. Including the second eastern migration, over 20 000 men are at or en route to fields.
