Amorous buffalo in Yukon during mating season and careless driving have caused buffalo vehicle collisions, killing four animals. Yukon biologist Manfred Hoefs says bulls roam seeking cows and can be unpredictable on roads, while tourists watch from cars without injuries to motorists.
In Edmonton some Canada Post workers oppose rotating strikes and want a full member vote on the union’s decision after rejecting the company’s wage offer. The union seeks 17.31 per hour by mid-1998. Canada Post offers 16.06 plus lump sum up to 3600.

On the fourth day of rotating strikes by CUPW, about half the union’s 45,000 members were off work, with 24 locals walking out. Ovide Mercredi and three other native leaders urged Canada to grant First Nations self government during a Whistler conference with 11 provincial and territorial premiers. They compared oppression to the Soviet regime and called for constitutional justice as the event continued despite a Quebec boycott. The session closed with no firm policy statement expected.
In Moscow Gorbachev told the national parliament the Soviet Union faces catastrophe and civil strife as seven of 15 republics, including Moldavia, declare independence. He threatened resignation if a union government cannot be formed to preserve the country. Lithuania Latvia Estonia Georgia Ukraine Belarus also assert independence. Romania recognizes Moldavia as independent.
Britain and Australia joined the United Kingdom as early recognizers of Baltic sovereignty. Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney said Canada would establish full diplomatic relations with Lithuania Latvia and Estonia, with plans for a consulate in Kiev.
