After seven months, Medicine Hat's 68 officers secure a 31 per cent wage rise over two years, with the city covering 75 per cent of pension plan shortfall and officers paying the remaining 25 per cent. The deal costs about 150000 over 15 years, amid budget and staffing considerations.

Turkish diplomat killed in Ottawa drive by shooting

Ottawa police say Col. Atilla Altikat the Turkish embassy military attache was struck fatally in a west Ottawa car attack about 9 a.m. EDT. A suspect fled after firing several rounds from a public safety item and authorities recovered a nine millimetre Browning in the vehicle. ASALA claimed responsibility in a telephone call to The Canadian Press, linking the act to Armenian genocide retaliation.

Premiers reject Ottawa plan for wage restraint

In Halifax the ten provincial premiers issued a broad economic program to Ottawa. They demand monetary policy alignment with the US, major reforms to FIRA including possible abolition, changes to the National Energy Program to boost Canadian equity, and a freeze on reducing federal health and education support. Howard Pawley of Manitoba opposed unanimity only on FIRA reform. A first ministers meeting was requested for the week of Sept 1.

The United Auto Workers named General Motors of Canada Ltd as a key strike target as contract talks with GM Ford and Chrysler move toward their Sept. 14 expirations. Robert White says Sept 15 is a real deadline and GM’s selection was expected.

Medicine Hat News to Raise Prices Aug 30

The Medicine Hat News will raise home delivery to 1.25 dollars per week and motor and rural routes to 58 dollars per year starting August 30. The single-copy price remains 25 cents. Publisher Andrew Snaddon cites higher production and newsprint costs, with carriers receiving 8.5 cents of the increase. The last carrier rate hike was May 1961.
