Lie detectors used more by police but not completely reliable
RCMP polygraph expert Sgt. Larry Proke told the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police that lie detectors are increasingly used as an investigation aid yet rely on skilled operators. He noted accuracy depends on the examiner and that about 30 polygraphists operate in Canada with training mostly in the United States. Proke cited waterbed-like room size effects and that tests usually involve up to ten questions repeated to form a pattern. He said the tool mainly helps establish innocence and can cut police work, but warned many rape complainants test as lying or exaggerating.
