Maj. Gen. William E. Depuy defended air support in a brutal clash with the Viet Cong near Saigon after napalm bombs burned or injured several American troops. He called it a tragic misfortune of war and said close air strikes were requested despite the near tragedy. Unofficial reports indicated seven killed and about 20 wounded.
The Montreal strike involves 118000 Canadian Pacific and Canadian National railway workers. unions seek wage hikes averaging 90 cents to $1.23 an hour plus vacation and benefits, with totals pegged around 2900 per worker annually. Non operating groups split from bargaining. residual unions push broader demands, some tied to separate unit contracts.
Hurricane Faith loomed toward the southeastern Bahamas prompting cancellation of Project Stormfury seeding plans due to proximity to land. Scientists waited by as Faith moved north of Puerto Rico at 6 am EDT, with winds around 15 mph and limited damage reported on the Leeward Islands.
Moscow observers predict a wheat harvest of 70 million tons or more by Soviet methods, aided by 3.8 million metric tons of imported wheat and better weather. Last year yielded 56.6 million, with a record of 74.2 million in 1964, as fertilizer use and payments boost output.
A dissident Negro group denounces Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s open housing agreement with Chicago officials as a sellout and vows a Sunday march into Cicero. King announced a 10 point program to open white neighborhoods to Negroes, after meeting in Stone Temple Baptist Church. Chester Robinson of the West Side Organization claims at least 300 marchers will target Cicero, a 70,002 resident suburb.
Lawrence Nagel 38 of Leader Saskatchewan was killed when his light plane struck a power line while attempting to land on a dirt road near Hilda Alberta about 50 miles northeast of Medicine Hat. He was en route from Leader to Swift Current and was survived by his wife Donna and two daughters aged eight and eleven.
OTTAWA The cabinet Friday chose compulsion as the first option to end the railway strike with an emergency session to present two key measures. A strike bill would force workers back to duty with an interim nine percent raise and possible compulsory arbitration if mediation fails. A second railway bill would be introduced for first reading, detailing higher freight rates and the abandonment of uneconomic branches, to enable railways to earn more. Conservative leader Diefenbaker signaled no objection to presenting the railway bill before debate on the strike bill, pending full bill details.
UN Secretary General U Thant said he had not yet decided whether to remain beyond his current term. He planned to inform the UN upon his return to New York from Chile on Sept 1. A regional and global chorus urged Thant to stay on for another five years.
About 500 striking workers lifted a barricade at the CNR ferry terminal in Port aux Basques midmorning enabling more than 200 passengers in 71 vehicles to leave the wharf after having been confined since 6:30 a.m. The blockade was rebuilt to bar over 50 cars from entering. Authorities nearby watched with limited orders.
Striking railway workers were urged to avoid violence during a country wide walkout. Nelson Levin, local chairman of conductors and brakemen in the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, said the aim is a clean legal strike. Token pickets were ordered and emergency trains will be run if needed.
External Affairs Minister Martin and diplomat Chester Ronning urged including Communist China in the United Nations. Ronning argued the UN cannot function without China's government and 700 million citizens, while Martin warned no acceptable method exists to admit China presently.
