British forces advance on the Hindenburg Line in the Ypres area during the 1488th day of the Flanders battle. Reports indicate French troops captured and a raid advancing into the northern outskirts of Baupaume with activity east of Henmel.
Reported advances in northern Picardy say British forces have penetrated the Hindenburg line east of Heninel and push toward Beugnatre near Bapaume. The British claim 21,000 prisoners since last Wednesday amid hard fighting around Croiselles and near Montauban and Longueval. French troops also report progress around Roye as German counterattacks are repulsed.
Mrs. Mary McEwen of Dauntless reports her son Private Kenneth Rodman Carr McEwen of the Infantry was admitted to No 4 Australian General Hospital on August 12 with shrapnel wounds to the arm and wrist. Lance Corporal A J Mathews and George Benjamin Mathews, son of Mrs E Mathews, are named among the recent losses, with Mathews dying of wounds at Alexandra Military Hospital Cosham after enlisting at age 16.
Resignations and leave requests crowded the board meeting as it prepares for next week’s term. Cosens and Conena resigned. Homes must leave to join the Royal Flying Corps. McDonald and Kerr granted extended leaves. Bellamy and Black vote on classroom staffing and health concerns. Radiator bids approved. plans shared with a new district south of Gleichen. Riverbend school room leased for Sunday school across the river at Barnabas.
The Army and Navy Veterans Association will meet at the Armoury at 8 o clock tonight. Capt A Stag of Calgary provincial organizer and secretary will complete the local unit organization and launch a ladies auxiliary. All members are urged to attend.
Gergt Trickey of the A P P has returned to the city to again head the local office after a short stint in Lethbridge where he was promoted to acting inspector but declined the job. His superiors acknowledged his abilities and pressed to keep him, yet he insisted on returning to the Hat and was granted his wish.
Report from Atlantic Port says seven men were killed and several injured when a steam piper on an American transport exploded while docked. The vessel carried supplies and men bound for France and appeared near readiness to sail. The blast reportedly caused extensive damage to the ship and nearby facilities.
A large group of 37 cars and as many as 37 business men prepare for a major trip to Ranalane described as the district’s largest of its kind. Cars will line up at 7:30 a.m. with numbers displayed for easy positioning, and a strict pace of twenty miles per hour will be kept. Drivers are urged to fuel up and tend repairs tonight to avoid delays, with stops planned at Bowell and Buffield for water and rest. The roster lists each car number and its driver and party, with continued coverage on page 4.
