In Lincoln a novelty iron man contest judged three grooms-to-be on ironing speed and quality during a fall bridal fair. None finished in three minutes yet Darren Nelson won a new iron for best effort while his bride-to-be Jennifer Herdahl praised his ironing and said she would rely on him after marriage.
In Managua gunmen release Vice President Virgilio Godoy and four others after a daylong standoff. Earlier, five hostages taken in remote northern Nicaragua by rightist guerrillas were freed. Crowds cheered UNO and demanded an end to the kidnappings as Godoy exited the UNO headquarters.
Alberta Medical Association leaders press for higher taxes or a sales tax to avert deep health care cuts. They warn: billions in reductions threaten patient care and hospital access, with doctors likely to bear a 20 to 25 per cent share of future cuts amid public opposition.
