Addis Ababa sees thousands flee following Haile Selassie orders as the Italian legation begins removing archives to Djibouti. Italians largely depart. sixty cases of official records headed by rail. In Rome Mussolini ponders cabinet actions amid Ethiopian crisis.
A string of storm-related disasters hits the Atlantic. In Newfoundland four schooners are feared lost after a fierce gale. one crew of six, five brothers, is reported missing from the Trepassey. In Genoa a waterspout killed at least five and injured over fifty, wrecking the waterfront and damaging ships and piers. A Newfoundland schooner near Torbay and Halcove incidents add to the coastal devastation.
Dr. William Feinbloom of Columbia University unveils microvision lenses at the American Academy of Optometry meeting. He says 120000 other blind people in American institutions could gain sight or partial vision through the new lenses. Four former patients, nearly totally blind, read newspapers aloud after using the lenses.
Book dealers in Regina report a phenomenal run of Social Credit literature since the Alberta elections. Public library attendants note a remarkable rise in demand for Social Credit books amid the regional political climate.
In ALT Ontario Aug 26 dispatch, Hon W Luler urges wealth redistribution if the baberal party forms Canada’s next government. He criticizes usurpation by the Conservative government and notes regional tensions after the Alberta election in a Liberal picnic setting.
Thomas A. Edison Jr., 59, eldest son of the inventor, died suddenly Sunday in a Springfield hotel. He headed the research engineering department at the Thomas A. Edison Co. West Orange plant while returning from Lake Sunapee visit with Charles Edison.
Hiram A Wallace aged 84 died near Calgary where he owned a ranch and was buried at Iroquois Ontario. His death follows a long life tied to agricultural work and community service.
Peter Zmurchyk aged 17 died after a farm work-horse bolted while he rode it on a North of Medicine Hat farm near Finn's Lake. The horse dragged him about a quarter mile before stopping. His cousin Peter William Zmurchyk witnessed the accident. Funeral services are planned for Tuesday at the Ukrainian Labor temple with interment at Hillside cemetery.
In Kirkland Lake Ontario a man, Robert Kennedy, died by detonating dynamite and his companion Mrs Annie Jackson was wounded. Police say Kennedy ended his life while Jackson remained conscious for a short time and described hearing a shot after approaching him. The case is treated as a probable death by self-inflicted action and an attempted murder.
Miss Doreen Saunders aged sixteen was electrocuted last night in her Toronto home while attempting to connect an extension wire to an electric iron in the kitchen.
The United States issued an emphatic protest after the seventh Congress of the Communist Internationale closed. In a blunt note to vice Commissar Krestinsky, Ambassador W C Bullitt said the activities constituted interference in U S internal affairs and violated pledges given when the Soviet Union was recognized.
The War Office said fixed defences at Aden and Malta would be strengthened and troops gathered at Southampton for dispatch. The Mediterranean fleet is ordered to depart Malta to position within swift striking distance of the Suez canal, linking Gibraltar to Aden.
Edmonton August 26 William Aberhart leader of the Social Credit party has advised the lieutenant governor that he and cabinet members will be ready to assume office on September 3. The tentative cabinet list includes Aberhart as premier and provincial secretary with Ernest C Manning as provincial treasurer, S A G Barnes as education minister, O G Devenish as lands and mines minister, J W Hugill as attorney general, W W Cross as health minister, Fred Anderson or H O Wright as public works minister, James Hansen as agriculture minister, Mrs W W Rogers as minister without portfolio, R E Ansley as trade and industry minister, and Mayor W A Fallow as minister of municipal affairs.
Calgary report says William Aberhart plans to leave for Edmonton Wednesday after caucus. He will meet the lieutenant governor in the capital on Thursday and may be asked to form a cabinet. If caucus approves, arrangements would be made for him to contest a provincial seat. E. C. Manning remains in place as Aberhart’s aide and will not resign his Calgary seat. Taschereau warns that Confederation stability could be challenged by Social Credit and new Alberta elections may come within six months.
A sequence of seismic disturbances from Thursday culminated Friday in a heavy tremor described as as strong as the December Plymouth shocks. No major damage is reported yet.
Denver police intensified efforts to locate one or more arsonists after a three day spree that included six downtown offices and hotels and three Catholic churches. Two men were detained for questioning but ruled out as suspects as investigators traced clues from nurse notes stolen from the Community Chest building. Authorities considered a possible Communist influenced plot to terrorize owners of large buildings and hotels.

Treasury moves include refining 150 million dollars in refunds and fisheries minister Ernst prepares loan machinery for fishermen.
