The Fair opens tomorrow in Medicine Hat with a large crowd predicted to attend. The program promises an excellent display of livestock judging and horse racing, expected to surpass last year. The opening program includes the grand stand performance and top horse races across Western Canada.
Six armed masked men, four likely Italians, robbed a Bank of Hamilton branch five miles from Vancouver center on Saturday around nine. About 400 dollars taken from the teller. Fire alarm slowed them. one bandit wounded, they fled by automobile. A stray bullet injured a clerk. other victims robbed earlier that night.
President Taft signed the Panama canal Bill at 7 15 tonight and sent a memorandum to Congress arguing the measure is not a treaty violation. He notes British protest over toll exemptions for American shipping and cites U S restraint by treaty despite ownership and control of the canal. London reports the bill seen as repudiating direct bargain with Britain and the cabinet plans Hague court arbitration consideration.
The annual convention of Universalist Churches of Vermont and the Province of Quebec began in Woodstock and will run through Thursday with sessions starting today.

A fierce blaze in the General Post Office and Central Telegraph Office in London cut telegraphic links to Britain and America. Fire began at 7 pm from a fused test box on the fourth floor, causing heavy losses to cables instruments and furniture but no structural damage or loss of life. About a thousand employees, mostly women, evacuated safely as the fire was brought under control. Telegraph service to the capital would be crippled for a day or two.
Eight youths under nineteen and a thirty five year old man were arrested for forcing their attention on young women in park lanes. Magistrate Morris criticized both youths and some women saying attire can invite advances and urged breaking up the practice. He fined the group though not deeming any heinous crime proven.

Oyster Bay August 25 Col Roosevelt announced he wished to appear before the Senate committee in Washington to refute John D Archbolds testimony about a 1904 contribution to the Republican funds The committee delayed his hearing until late September and could not meet Monday as requested by the Colonel
Montreal August 24 Grand Trunk officials deny rumors that Vice-President Fitzhugh of Central Vermont and other road officials will resign. They say nothing substantiates the chatter and no changes are announced.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier former premier and Liberal leader will depart Ottawa tomorrow for an extensive western Canada tour. He will address the Canadian Forestry Association convention in Vancouver and visit major cities en route to and from the Pacific coast.
The Labor Day sports committee advances a province wide celebration on September 2 with growing entries from Western Canada. A morning parade was dropped in favor of a sports program, prizes are on display at Treland & Co., and a prize waltz with Rigg's orchestra is planned for the evening platform at the baseball park. No entries will be accepted after August 31 due to high participation.
Calgary August 25 John Dalynecho lies dying after four men emerged from an alley and demanded cash. Dalynecho was struck with a revolver and knocked down. the assailants took their money and warned John Dargo to flee. Dargo alerted police as Dalynecho was taken to hospital. Doctors feared death early today.
Brandon Manitoba August 26 The city won an order from the Railway Commissioners to compel the Grand Trunk Pacific to construct a Brandon branch from a northeast main line point. City officials received notice of the board’s order to begin work at once and a copy of the approved branch plan.
Port Arthur Ontario workers ended the truckers strike when they agreed to accept the company offer now in effect since they went out a week ago. Wages rise two cents an hour and overtime gets two and a half cents. Company had held to terms after initial offer and did not budge.

In Revelstoke British Columbia on August 26 progress clears a slide east of Rogers Pass causing six westbound and seven eastbound trains to be stalled. No. 4 was diverted and passengers ferried past the slide as three hundred workers with shovels and dynamite clear the road. The CPR hopes a new tunnel between Glacier and Bear Creek will prevent repeats in this difficult section.
