In Hazleton Pennsylvania rescue crews drilled a 26 inch bit into coal and sand rock to enlarge a 12 inch escape hole for two miners David Fellin and Henry Throne 58 and 28 11 days underground. A lifeline hole is being drilled to reach Louis Bova 42 separated by debris with hopes to rescue all three.
Sixty government soldiers were killed and 120 wounded in fighting near Saigon between Catholic and Buddhist troops. In Hue a two hour battle left about 30 Buddhists dead and 70 wounded. Brig Gen Do Cao Tri put total casualties lower. Vu Van May resigned as foreign minister and Diem granted a three month pilgrimage. About 900 arrested in Hue.
Syria and Israel clashed at the United Nations Security Council accusing each other of border aggression after a week of incidents along the demilitarized frontier. Israel's Michael S. Comay blamed Syria for increasing tension. Syria's Salal el Dine Tarazi countered with claims of Israeli belligerence and blackmail. U Thant urged restraint to prevent further outbreaks.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Orsini, a blind Oklahoma City pair, traveled over 2000 miles to stand on the 325 foot Outlook Tower above Niagara Falls. He said the view makes him feel like a king looking down from the clouds.
Maple Creek residents prepare for an interdenominational service at 7 p.m. in Legion Park to start the town's diamond jubilee week. Archdeacon J. W. Carter of Medicine Hat will deliver the main address. If weather fails, the service moves to the Community Hall with clergy from all churches participating.
Maple Creek celebrates its status as one of the oldest towns in southwestern Saskatchewan dating to before incorporation in 1903. A noon pioneer parade will feature floats, veterans, a band, and heritage themes with locals and invited Indigenous participants in full regalia.

A three partner company is expected to announce a plan to deliver piped television to Medicine Hat homes. A $250000 six storey twenty four unit apartment building is proposed on Division Ave above the 1st St intersection. Reports on equine encephalomyelitis in southeastern Alberta were not confirmed. City council will appoint a full time solicitor to handle city business. The civic finance committee approved a centennial committee meeting and the appointment of a chairman and secretary.
