German raids hit the Dover area with heavy shelling and bombers while London endured alarms and later a brief all clear. RAF fighters engaged Dorniers and Messerschmitts as British big guns answered along the French coast during a tense day of bombardment.
The Hungarian Romanian conference over Transylvania collapsed as Romanians rejected two thirds of the province and offered minority protections instead. Hungary prepared to depart for Bucharest and Budapest while Romania tightened defense measures and called army reserves.
Ben Russell chief engineer of the P F R A led an informal inspection of southern Alberta's proposed water development area along the Milk and St Marys rivers. Accompanying him were Charles Stewart and Lawrence Johnston Burpee of Ottawa as part of the International Joint Commission survey team. They toured Waterton National Park and will study storage and canal development with McB McWhorter next week.
A French bomber with three crew members flew over Spanish territory near La Luna and landed at Gibraltar to join Britain in its war against Germany. Two other French planes from French Morocco also reached Gibraltar, their crews surrendering to the British with a resolve to fight for France’s liberation.
A year ago the German Russian non aggression treaty shocked the world and predicted a coming great war. Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin shook hands, Poland vanished, France lay in ruins, Britain stood alone with Empire backing. Nazi aggression bombed German industry while Britain defended home skies.
City notes describe the annual Kinsmen picnic at the old Drowning Ford ranch thirty three miles downriver with a bring your own cup policy. D W Clapperton of the CPR legal department visited Calgary and town activity included a theatre party for the S A R Bugle Band. A flower show publicity at Crystal Dairy Ltd and water shortages affect local ferries Bow Island on the South Saskatchewan Jenner on the Red Deer paused service. The Boys and Girls Junior Band set a Riverside Park concert and a September 1 picnic at Elkwater is planned.
Crops across south eastern Alberta are averaging five bushels per acre more than four weeks ago amid drought and grasshopper threats. Wheat quality also improved with many districts reporting grades higher than 1939. Estimates show yields in Medicine Hat area with towns like Irvine and Jenner reaching 30 to 35 bushels, though Some districts like Manyberries remain low.
Calgary reports an eight million dollar ammonium nitrate plant for the Dominion government has begun in Alberta under Consolidated Mining and Smelting. Exact location and employment figures are not disclosed. The plant joins a group of new government chemicals units supporting central Canada explosives plants.
Creston British Columbia August 24 The survey of burned wheat acreage and crop conditions is being conducted by Mr Lucas of Calgary for the Canadian Wheat Board. Local Board of Trade requested raising storage quota from 11 to 16 bushels per acre seeded. About 450 acres destroyed by fire. Elevator capacity stands at 200000 bushels.
Mayor Hector Lang opened the 1940 Medicine Hat flower show before a large crowd, with proceeds going to the Red Cross. Ernest Warham, president of the Horticultural Society, urged broader garden entries and praised high exhibit quality. The show runs today with an auction this evening.
Forty members of the Junior Band under Mr. Dan Burgess will perform Sunday at 9 pm in Riverside Park. They recently bought instruments from the S A R Band and note added donation costs. The programme includes O Canada, Washington Post March, Haute Monde Overture, Thunderer March, Over the Waves Waltz, Independentia March, and Abide With Me.
An admiralty notice says the Canadian destroyer St. Lawrence saved 850 people after the Arandora Star was torpedoed on July 2. The ship, off Scotland’s west coast, sped 84 nautical miles in under three hours and landed survivors at a Scottish port. The Arandora Star carried Germans and Italians for internment in Canada.
The Duke of Windsor as Bahamas governor ordered searches of all goods entering or leaving the Bahamas and authorized seizure of bank notes postal orders gold securities or foreign currency imported. The order under the 1939 Emergency Power Defence Act takes effect next Tuesday Sept 7 with licenses only by special permit. Visitors had earlier brought US currency while Britain banned notes after fears of German loss.
Lord Beaverbrook announced J W McConnell of Montreal donated 1,000,000 to fund aircraft known as McConnell's squadron. The British air forces reported thirteen German planes shot down and the RAF lost one aircraft, with the pilot safe. Manston airdrome suffered considerable damage from a raid, while RAF bombers carried out daylight and night attacks on targets in occupied France and the Low Countries. Nazis shelled southeast England with long range guns from the French coast as British counter-barrages responded.
The Daily Mail says British troops are rehearsing for possible parachute action in Britain. Slim soldiers wear women’s attire with handbags and powderpuffs to renew makeup if rain threatens. Some disguise as milkmen or bowler-hatted businessmen, equipped with bicycles rifles and camping gear.
Major General Sam Hughes named Knight Commander of the Bath in Canada. Allied airmen drop 80 bombs on railway stations at Tergnier and Noyon in northern France. Italian forces take Tolmino. August 25 1915 Austro German advance captures Brest Litovsk and Lipsk in Poland. Togoland capitulates to British forces on Africa's west coast.
Father Edward O Brien reports Indians found a skeleton under a torn tent 200 miles inland in northern Labrador. The remains are linked to Herman J Koehler of Orange New Jersey and Fred R Connell Jr of Glen Ridge New Jersey who vanished during a July 1931 canoe expedition with guide Jim Martin.
Two Britons receive Victoria Crosses for conspicuous gallantry in Belgium during May and June. 2nd Lt Richard Wallace Annand of the Darkham Light Infantry is honored for leading a platoon under heavy fire near a blown bridge on the Dyle river and rescuing a wounded batman in a wheelbarrow. C.S.M. George Griscock of the Royal Norfolk Regiment earns the award after organizing a flank cover and destroying a German machine gun despite both legs being severely wounded.
