In Amsterdam on August 24 a well informed source says a new large peace plan is developing in Berlin not to be hidden in neutral press. If plans succeed the scheme will be disclosed to the world in about two weeks and will not take the form of earlier feelers.
Global war updates describe heavy fighting around the Baltic and Belgian coast. Reports claim German reverse at Qaga and Russian gains near Brest-Litovsk while Allied bombardments strike Zeebrugge and coastal defences.
Report from London and Amherst NS describes a German order to tighten treatment of British POWs including Canadians. It cites alleged unsanitary camps in Amherst and claims prisoners will lose privileges and receive reduced rations. Washington says US would investigate if complaints arise. German ambassador Count Von Bernstorff asked the United States not to take a final stand on the Arabic sinking until all facts are known. He telegraphed from Cedarhurst, S. D., asking no steps until Germany can present its version. The State Department will wait for word from Berlin before acting.
Marietta Georgia August 24 coroner's Jury Inquiry into the Leo M Frank lynching ends without hearing testimony on identities and returns in three minutes that Frank died by hanging at the hands of persons unknown, marking the inquiry closed.
The Medicine Liat Company of the Bord Regiment will form the second draft from the Sarcee camp. The Calgary company under Capt Pryce-Jones will make the first draft and depart in about a month. A second draft will follow in another month with the Hatters, amid improved mood among the troops despite rainy camp conditions. Hat boys were inoculated for typhoid on Saturday.
Treasurer William Cousins of the Patriotic Fund reports receipt of 9.20 from President S Short of the Football League. The amount equals the net proceeds of the game between the League and the 63rd team.
The local Trades and Labor Council opposes the appointment of George Patterson as the Labor Gazette correspondent replacing Alderman Robt Collier, now in the 63rd regiment. They accuse politicians and Times directors Nelson Spencer and M. C. Sackrider of engineering the selection, arguing Patterson lacks labor affairs involvement beyond union membership.
