Official communication from France reports a desperate general engagement with heavy losses for bot Cines as German forces push on Namur Liège fortifications. French positions at Luneville Amancée Dieulenard occupied. Germans aim to recapture Mulhaugen.
Reports from Paris and London describe a vast engagement from Mons Belgium to the Luxemburg frontier. British troops held their ground near Mons as French forces pressed the offensive with the allied German effort concentrated on Namur and Liège forts resisting. Rumors claimed German advances toward Nancy but unconfirmed.
Berlin reports from Nauen via wireless that Grand Duke Albrecht of Württemberg's German army defeated a French force at Neufchateau. The communiqué says German troops captured guns flags and prisoners including several generals and that Prince Ruprecht of Bavaria Crown Prince Wilhelm and Grand Duke Rechberg pursue Ripprecht's army. An English cavalry brigade was defeated.
London reports that about 800 Germans have been naturalized in Australia since August 12th. The Reuters correspondent notes the average monthly naturalizations run at no fewer than 70.
Advices to local steamship agents indicate regular callings are scheduled by all Atlantic lines. Rates have increased by 20 cents per heat and 10 cents second class, with third class up 5 cents though reductions already begin.
