At a city council meeting Alderman Johnston moved to appoint a committee to investigate Dr. Thomas the health officer's resignation letter. The letter accuses the council of neglect and mismanagement including garbage cleanup delays cesspool neglect and issues with the isolation hospital and milk inspector appointment. The motion to accept the resignation was carried amid sharp exchanges over responsibility and performance.
Gordon Terrie’s body remains unfound as Chief Bruce denounces alleged neglect in river search. Workers and foreman questioned after a wheelbarrow and hat were seen, while officers struggle against a fast current and faulty plank work.
City engineer Grimmed reported the Ogilvie property gas well is completed to the thousand feet gas strata. In St James Cathedral Montreal, Monsignor Georges Gauthier was consecrated bishop of Philoppopolis and auxiliary bishop of Montreal by papal delegate Mer Stagni. Gauthier, born 1871 in Montreal, will succeed Mer Racicot who resigned due to ill health.

The Rev. Robert Hensley Henson, Canon of Westminster Abbey and rector of St. Margaret's, sails for Montreal to begin a three month tour of Canada and the United States. He will lecture at Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania and Union Theological Seminary after preaching in Montreal and Winnipeg.
Last night the engineer was instructed to stake a survey widening Toronto Street by seven feet on each side from 4th Avenue to the Road Allowance. The council pledged to protect trees and improvements until removal is demanded by business needs. The Mayo notified the council that slaughterhouse owners fail to follow by-law on concrete walls and floors. a committee will investigate.
Mr. J. W. Wilkinson, organizer for Western Canada of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada, arrives from Lethbridge to address a gathering of Medicine Hat laboring men at Eagles Hall tonight. The meeting, run by local Trades and Labor Council officers, invites non union laborers to attend as topics of vital interest are introduced.
The Canadian Stewart Company asked to lay concrete for 90 foot Ogilvie elevator tanks and work Sundays until completion. City Council debated, Mayor warned of legal limits, but after discussion a motion passed granting the fullest consent for Sunday work.
Lomson, Aug. 23. Rumor says Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, will postpone his proposed visit to Canada until a settlement is reached on the naval question between the Imperial Government and Canada, per the Weekly Nation report.
Bulletin from London reports a fire at the general post office halting telegraphic business including trains and Atlantic cable claims. The blaze affects Block 15 and North Yuill with damages listed at 2709 each. Ho Pettet & Co. contact at Phone 481.
Toronto August 24 the Canadian National Exhibition was opened by the Duke of Connaught who pressed a button to start machinery. The Scots Guards Band provided music as crowds witnessed the ceremony. The government building costing 165000 and other new structures mark the expansion. The exhibit runs to September 9 with a major Boy Scout camp and review drawing scouts from England Australia Canada and the Empire.
Glasgow aug 24 historic Duart Castle on the isle of Mull hosted the first national gathering of the Clan Maclean since 1745. Colonel Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean heads the clan which numbers about 25000 worldwide. Sir Allan Maclean and Colonel Maclean of Delaware among noted members.
The United States naval collier Jupiter the largest vessel built on the Pacific coast was launched at Mare Island navy yard San Francisco August 24. The 524 foot long ship will displace about 20 000 tons and was christened by Mrs Thomas F Ruhm wife of naval constructor Thomas I Ruhm who oversaw its construction.
Delegates from many States arrive in St Louis to attend the thirty first national Encampment of the Sons of Veterans. Sessions begin at Planters Hotel Monday and run through much of the week. The Ladies Auxiliary led by Mrs Flora A S Whitney of Worcester will meet. Local organization provides ample entertainment for visitors.
Dublin August 22. Mary Leigh and Gladys Evans, suffragettes imprisoned August 1 for five years for wounding John Redmond leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party with a hatchet and for setting fire to the Theatre Royal, declare a hunger strike and are being forcibly fed by jail officials.
The report recalls August 24 when 98 years ago British forces under Gen Ross seized Washington and set fire to the Capitol, the Congressional Library, and other public buildings.
