The Alberta government will run a province wide opinion poll to gauge public attitudes on welfare reform. Bruce Rawson announced a 5,000 person random sample polling starting in early September and finishing by mid December, with 12 community telephone hook ups and 1,700 copies of a 26 page background paper distributed.
Ottawa reports that 46 year old Postmaster General Jean Pierre Cote will not seek re election. He cited personal reasons after a long career including heart surgery in 1968 and roles as revenue minister and communications portfolio holder. The move comes amid ongoing postal unions disputes and efforts to improve mail service efficiency.
The International Olympic Committee expelled Rhodesia from the Munich Olympics after a 36 to 31 vote with three blanks. The move averts a boycott by African nations black U.S. athletes and Communist bloc members and preserves a $700 million event.
