Outside Hilda, 60 miles east of Medicine Hat, a large PFRA reservoir faces a three week water supply. Residents rely on a single inadequate well while the town still debates piped connections and who may use the water, as a pump house and school needs strain the system. PFRA officials had promised yearly filling, but plans stalled amid local disagreements. See WATER (Page 5).
P A Stonehouse, Medicine Hat representative for the provincial department of municipal affairs, says the department will fill the 5,000,000 gallon reservoir at Hilda and secure pipe to reach the nearest water supply. The spring delay was due to no runoff and lack of pipe. irrigation season is over and pipe is now available. He notes the existing pumphouse should supply pressure for a new school addition and that a nine mill road-building tax funds are separate from the reservoir. He cites Schuler as a comparable nearby example with no issues.
Crop prospects grow brighter as 1958 harvest advances across Manitoba Saskatchewan and Alberta. Weather improved after June drought and late rains boosting yields with Searle Grain forecasting wheat around 303 million bushels and quality described as excellent by officials. Harvest crews rely on equipment as labour needs are met by local and transient workers.
East Germany plans require children over 11 to work one day a week in a factory or on a farm after September 1. The policy faced resistance with officials citing fears it could disrupt production, and officials acknowledge more outreach is needed to inform schools and families.

John Stewart Simpkins 33 and James London 40 escaped from the New Brunswick Hospital for mental patients in Lancaster New Brunswick. They slipped from an elevator shaft and were found in Grand Bay on the St John River. Simpkins, serving a life sentence for killing his baby daughter, had been transferred from Dorchester penitentiary after being declared insane.
Washington officials predicted Russia would accept Western terms to begin multilateral talks in New York under UN auspices on a worldwide system to prevent sneak nuclear tests. The United States and Britain offered a one year moratorium with continued Soviet testing halt and possible Geneva venue.
