The Royal Air Force said its bombers destroyed two Italian submarines a destroyer and a submarine depot ship in a low fly attack on warships at Bomba roadstead Libya. All British aircraft returned safely and night raids also hit Derna and transport depots with no British casualties. An Italian air raid on Alexandria caused no damage.

Brooks native son Flying Officer Stanley Powell Swenson, a Royal Air Force pilot, is reported killed in action on August 15 1940. Born in Brooks 25 years ago he married Idna Gauther in Canada last year and a son was born in England seven days before the death cable.

Creditors Barred From Accepting Wheat for Resale to Board

Farmers creditors may not take wheat from producers to settle debts and then sell it to the Canadian Wheat Board. Under the Canada Grain Act the board buys only from the producer. Creditors may accept the grain for storage with title remaining with the producer, then deliver to the board under land quotas when ready.

Raider Attacks British Ship Reported in Tasman Sea

The British steamer Tarakina radioed from the Tasman Sea saying a raider fired on her. Prime Minister Fraser announced the first such attack in those waters. The ship’s position was given but no update arrived. New Zealand forces pursued the raider as the search continued.

Hazel Pickett Drowned Near South Saskatchewan Bridge

Hazel Pickett aged nine of Taber drowned in five feet of water near the second northern pier of the traffic bridge on the South Saskatchewan river at 3 pm. Yvonne Narum escaped as rescuers freed her, while locals recovered Hazel after over twenty minutes submerged. Dr. MacCharies declared life extinct. coroner declined an inquest. body sent to Fallison Funeral Home.
