Minister replies to Medicine Hat about airport crisis. Hees acknowledges receipt of the city's August 12 letter warning of possible loss of airline service without improvements or a new airport. He will consult department officials and reply with a course of action as soon as decided, with details unlikely before early winter.
In Gaspe hills tension ran high amid a long labor dispute as authorities kept a curfew in place and guarded life and property. Union leaders and hotel plans were disrupted while the USWA vowed security measures and parish intervention was sought to avert catastrophe.

Paris reports the North Africa committee reached broad agreement on a statute granting Algeria greater autonomy within the French union. The plan envisions six to seven self-administering regions with elected assemblies and representation in the French parliament, to be presented to cabinet after talks with major political leaders.
RC Smith of Vancouver travels by bicycle from Vancouver to Kapuskasing with a 60 pound packed bicycle and 130 pound rider. He began June 1 and rode 32 days through British Columbia’s mountains. An accident on the Hope Princeton highway delayed him 15 days. He camps along the route but now stays in hotels as nights grow colder. He previously served as an Anglican missionary in Northern Saskatchewan.
