William Mullen 31 escaped from Stony Mountain penitentiary near Winnipeg and police search continued. Foot and mouth disease outbreaks increased in England with thousands of animals destroyed recently.
The remains of ten natives eaten by headhunters were found today, raising the death toll to 38 from two savage attacks last week. President Eisenhower noted Harold Stassen told him he would drop his Nixon campaign. Marilyn Bell plans a second attempt to swim the Strait of Juan de Fuca tomorrow morning.
In Rome Ezio Petrucci, 43, was struck by a flying human skull when a three year old son of a physician tossed bone fragments from a window. Hospital attendants expect Petrucci to recover fully in a week. the other skull was undamaged.
Northwest Nitro Chemicals Ltd announces two key posts at its new Medicine Hat plant. Charles J. Dee is appointed safety and security supervisor and Mrs. Gladys Parker becomes industrial nurse, both joining the personnel division led by W. L. Blenner Hassett. Dee, born in Gloucester in 1906, has deep industrial and wartime ammonia plant experience, while Parker trained at Medicine Hat General Hospital and previously served Moose Jaw Clinic and a U.S. county hospital.
Charges of contravening the Early Closing by law will be heard against three local merchants next Wednesday August 29. The summonses were served last night as authorities prepare magistrate signatures. Names of those who gathered the evidence were not released. The case tests By law No. 569 passed November 3, 1919, restricting closing times to 6 pm on Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday and 9 pm Saturdays with 12 noon Wednesday.
A Medicine Hat district soldier Eddie Kundert and his wife Evelyn were hospitalized in Calgary after a two car crash near Gleichen. Their two children escaped serious injury. The Kunderts were returning to Whitehorse after holidays when another car driving onto the main highway collided with their 1956 Dodge. The son of the late Lucien Manart was believed to have been driving that car.
