The Canadian Air Line Pilots Association says 1,700 Air Canada pilots voted 96.6 percent in favor of a strike to begin at 3 a.m. EDT Thursday. Concessions offered as deadline nears.
Claude Taylor in Montreal signals optimism a strike can be avoided as Air Canada offers to submit to binding arbitration over first class flying and to a one year contract while CALPA fights for a one year deal. Nordair integration and seniority lists loom.
Israeli planes bombed two Palestinian bases in Beirut's Burj el Barajneh refugee camp and Damour early today in response to a Mayfair bus attack on El Al crews in London. PLO said three guerrillas killed and 14 wounded, eyewitnesses cited five dead. One El Al stewardess died and several others were injured in London.
Premier Mamdouh Salem submitted his resignation after most Misr party members joined President Sadat’s new National Democratic party. Sadat asked him to stay to avoid disruption ahead of the Camp David talks, and Salem’s resignation was withdrawn.
In Abadan, Iran, police report 10 arrests over the Cinema Rex fire that killed hundreds. Official toll 377 dead and 10 injured with 20 to 40 escaping unharmed. Ettelaat cited 430 dead and 728 tickets sold, noting 200 identified so far. Suspects include two staff and the owner cited for negligence.
Prague residents went to work under police watch with walkie talkies at key intersections. Green uniformed officers guarded St Wenceslas statue, site of past protests. Early trams ran, crowds showed little sign of protest as people recalled tanks in Wenceslas Square but dismissed any action.
In Geneva the CERN team stored several hundred antiprotons for 85 hours in a magnetic ring, a first for antimatter research. Led by Guido Petrucci, scientists produced antiprotons by colliding protons with a tungsten target, signaling progress toward longer lasting antimatter beams and new elementary-particle studies.
In La Tuque a 25 year old entertainer known as Le Grand Melvin died after a 22 metre boa constrictor wrapped around his neck during a vampire themed act at Club La Tuquois. Police say strangulation caused his death and an autopsy is planned. The boa and a smaller cobra were seized from the lab of the University of Quebec Trois Rivieres after the incident.
