In Sydney Nova Scotia a police strike led merchants to guard stores overnight as heavy rain reduced vandalism from the prior night. Eight windows were broken but no thefts reported. police seek wage increases to 9000 by 1973.
Prime Minister Trudeau said Canada would press Washington to exempt it from a new U.S. tax. He warned that full effect of the surcharge could trigger the loss of thousands of Canadian jobs and cut short a European trip to return home for talks with Finance Minister Benson and Trade Minister Pepin. Opposition leaders urged direct talks with President Nixon and broader investments to reduce reliance on the United States.
About 3,000 young attendees clashed with security as they tried to storm the Vancouver venue. Roughly 35 youths and two police officers were hurt in the chaotic scene while twenty officers, some in riot helmets, aimed to halt the breach at the sold out Led Zeppelin concert.
A powerful blast set eight stores ablaze in central Belfast as firefighting teams battled flames for hours. Earlier a gunman bombed an automobile showroom. two men and a woman were slightly injured. South Vietnam's Supreme Court, deemed under pressure from President Thieu and U S officials, reinstated Vice-President Nguyen Cao Ky on the presidential ballot. Ky deferred his decision to run until Sunday as Minh withdrew, leaving Thieu as the sole candidate at that moment.
The State Department labeled Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan's plan to establish a permanent government in Arab areas seized in 1967 as harmful. In Pittsburgh an Allegheny Airlines jet crash landed after gear loss, no injuries. Hoffa parole denied for the third time on charges of jury tampering and mail fraud.
Rebel radio says 10,000 armed workers approach La Paz to back the uprising against President Juan Jose Torres. Government radios report Torres ready to defend to the end as miners protest and explosions bolt the city. BWTU says cabinet refused arming workers. a plan to form commando units follows.
