Canada seeks UN condemnation of Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia

Foreign Minister Sharp announced Canada will urge the United Nations to condemn Russia and its satellite allies for invading Czechoslovakia. He called the action a flagrant breach of non intervention and said Ottawa will keep seeking peaceful relations with the Soviet Union while assisting Czech refugees if possible. Trudeau, holidaying in Spain, to return soon as cabinet reviews moves in international bodies.

Johnson calls for withdrawal of all Communist forces

President Johnson urged the Soviet Union and allied Communist forces to withdraw from Czechoslovakia. He labeled the invasion a flat violation of the UN charter and said the US would consult urgently with allies to consider moves in the United Nations to uphold Czechoslovakia’s rights.

Hatter Still Missing Since August 6

A man reported missing since August 6 remains unfound. Gerrit Cazemier, 33, of 2414 15th Ave SE, was last seen in Bassano. Police consider he may have joined a revivalist religious group headquartered in Winnipeg. He is six foot one, 155 pounds, sandy hair, slim build, large ears. Call police with any information.

Prague radio appeals for Czech restraint

Prague broadcasts urged calm as Soviet led invasion tightened control over Czechoslovakia. Troops from East Germany Poland Bulgaria and Hungary entered Prague to stop liberal reforms, with casualties and barricades reported near the radio building. Alexander Dubcek was confined at party headquarters as crowds and officials reacted worldwide.

Wheat board seeks relief in U S port crisis

The Canadian Wheat Board will divert Western grain to Duluth Minnesota to bypass Fort William and Port Arthur during the grain handlers strike. Negotiations with Duluth will begin immediately for rail shipments to be trans loaded to Canadian lake carriers. The plan is a short term reinforcement and will cover only a small percentage of normal shipments.

Czechs Demand Withdrawal From Invasion

Ottawa cable reports the Czechoslovak government demanded five invading neighbors withdraw all military units immediately. The Czech foreign ministry condemned the occupation as lawless and urged Russia Poland East Germany Hungary and Bulgaria to leave without delay. No fighting reports beyond radio accounts in Prague.
