July Road Toll Hits New Peak

Forty four people died in Alberta highway accidents during July, the highest one month toll in the province’s history. The Alberta Safety Council reported a six per cent rise in accidents in the first seven months of 1958 to 12,684, with fatalities increasing to 176 from 188.

Lethbridge Records Provincial Heat Amid Mild North

Lethbridge reached the province’s high at 81 degrees on Wednesday with Medicine Hat near 81. The city saw 79, a single degree below the forecast 80. Lethbridge’s low was 56 with a 59 in the surrounding area. Calgary and Moose Jaw logged 75 and 50, and 77 and 55 respectively. The forecast calls for sunny warm weather with light winds and no rain expected today.

Cen tral High School in Little Rock will reopen September 2 as an all white school after the U S Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay delaying integration until the Supreme Court rules. The school board may appeal within three months while officials weigh a possible special session plus potential measures to halt or close Central High under conditions of forced integration.

Five Convicted On Bomb Charge In Amman Court

A Jordanian military court convicted five young Arabs of exploding bombs in Amman. One defendant, a 19 year old Nadia Salti, received seven and a half years reduced to three years in hard labor. Her fiancé, 22 year old Stephen Theodore Stephan, was sentenced to death. The blasts included attacks on the British Library and the Jordanian Development Board. The case drew radio attention labeling one defendant a Moslem Joan of Arc.

You Cant Be Too Careful Clip Sparks Alarm

An airline clerk in Nelson British Columbia suspected a Ukrainian accented man seeking to send a parcel to the RCMP in Kelowna and alerted RCMP after directing him to the express office. Mounties then intervened and the man revealed himself as a plain clothes RCMP officer.
