Council debated adding a new generating unit to meet peak demand for 1929. Supt. Davis advised a $100,000 upgrade with extended building space and auxiliaries, funded by a bond issue, to ensure uninterrupted service and future expansion.
Oslo reports the Norwegian steamer Michael Lars searched southwest of Raperande Island for signs of Roald Amundsen and his party with no results. A dated note from Van Hogendorp on Higerante Island claims he landed there without arms or provisions but was later picked up by a passing ship. no trace of Amundsen remains.
Panama August 24 A fierce storm on the sea near Panama led to the loss of fourteen crewmen from the steamer W S Ales cenngy. The gale toppled the ship s forward deck and swept away lifeboats. The ship endured a heavy sea pounding decks and windows smashed as crew attempted to cover hatches. None of the fourteen were rescued and the vessel drifted in the aftermath.
Eskiios and Davis Stratt kayakers search fjords between Cape Farewell and Holstenborg for Bert Hassell and Park Craery after a possibly downed plane. Greenland authorities seek aid from United States delegation and Greenland trading to aid the search with two crew members aboard the plane Greater Rockford.
Dr. 8 F Tolmie was sworn in as premier of British Columbia by Chief Justice MacDonald. He announced he would name his cabinet today, replacing Hon J D MacLean whose Liberal government ended after nearly 12 years. Tolmie is BCs 20th premier since joining Canada. The Times forecasts a cabinet with Fr H Pooley as attorney general among likely ministers.
Dr L G Connor of Washington DC and assistant P M Gates arrived in Edmonton as part of an American Tariff Commission study of livestock production and trade conditions. They will visit Vancouver next and meet Hon George Hoadley and other officials before reporting to Congress in months ahead.
Dublin NH Aug 21 Col George B Harvey veteran publicist and former ambassador to London and London era political fixer died suddenly at his home of a heart attack. He helped shape two presidents Woodrow Wilson and Warren G Harding and opposed Wilson’s League of Nations editor of Harpers Weekly and North American Review he guided Wilson’s political foes and advised the Senate irreconcilables in the Versailles treaty fight. Early session buying suggested export demand but support faded after mid session, leaving prices down about a cent to 0 8 from the prior close while cash grain showed modest gains for numbers 3 and 4 wheat. Barley and rye were active, oats steadied, and flax rose about three cents.

Severe tornadoes struck Southern Minnesota and Northern Iowa with Austin Minnesota worst hit. Three killed and over fifty injured as homes and businesses were demolished along Main Street. two women died near Twin Lakes and near Rockwell City, Iowa. One hundred American Legion members aided patrols with the Minnesota National Guard after darkness and power failures.
