A Statistics Canada report shows over 2.5 million employed Canadians, about one in five, have literacy skills exceeding job demands. Researchers Graham Lowe and Harvey Krahn say the result reflects too few highly skilled jobs, based on the 1994 International Adult Literacy Survey of 5,660 workers aged 16 plus.
Buses arrive at Medicine Hat as 37 Yukon athletes join 230 Albertan hosts for the games opening. Crowds of 3,500 to 3,600 cheer go Alberta and go BC with chants, flags, and balloons. Organizers expect a similar turnout for Saturday’s closing events at Cypress Centre.

Aimed at raising child abuse awareness, events include a charity golf tournament and a barbecue led by local officials. Kennedy continues to Irvine and Medicine Hat on his cross country journey.
Brooks Mayor Bob Breakell urges Transportation Minister Walter Paszkowski to install traffic lights at Cassils Road and the Trans-Canada Highway after a fatal crash nearby. The minister notes a study is pending and says lights on primary highways are unlikely unless proven to solve the problem.
