Tax cut could follow deficit reduction in Canada
Ottawa reports a smaller than forecast deficit, fueling speculation that a federal tax cut could come. Nesbitt Burns chief economist Sherry Cooper says the deficit drop could enable a full federal tax cut in 1997, a likely election year. The Finance Department pegs last year’s shortfall below 30 billion Canadian dollars, well under the 32.7 billion budget forecast.
