Three dead in Port Hardy hotel bar shooting

A gunman killed two fishermen in the Sea Gate Hotel bar around 1 a.m. then shot himself four hours later. Police sealed the area and tracked the suspect after witnesses reported seven to eight shots. The victims were not believed to be locals.

Romanow enters Saskatchewan NDP leadership race

Roy Romanow announced in Saskatoon he will seek the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party leadership to succeed Allan Blakeney. A former attorney general and M L A for Saskatoon Riversdale, he is the first to confirm his candidacy and said he could contribute best in Saskatchewan. He noted federal politics were possible but his home province will be his focus.

Woman dies after dispute near Dunmore south of Medicine Hat

Helen Currence 35 died during a domestic incident at an acreage 3.7 kilometres south of Dunmore. Her husband Gordon Currence 41 was wounded and taken to Medicine Hat Regional Hospital in serious condition as police and ERT swarmed the scene overnight. RCMP, Calgary ERT, SWAT and canine units surrounded the residence and neighbors described a dawn arrival as officers secured the area.

Northwest Flight 255 crash probe cites missed preflight checks

Investigators say Northwest Airlines Flight 255 MD 80 did not deploy wing flaps nor complete preflight checks including flap settings. The Detroit takeoff accident at Detroit Metropolitan Airport killed up to 158 with one young girl survivor in serious condition. The cockpit voice recorder showed no warning tone indicating ignored pilot actions.

Hungerford killings shock quiet English town

In Hungerford England a quiet 27 year old man Michael Ryan opened fire with two guns in a 30 minute rampage killing 14 people including his mother and injuring 15 before shooting himself. He used an automatic pistol and AK-47 in the center of town before police closed in and found him dead.

Sudbury Gas Leak Triggers Hospital Admissions

A leak from an acid plant released sulphur trioxide gas drifting over a lake in eastern Sudbury leaving more than 120 people hospitalized. Most patients were treated and released with minor symptoms, two serious cases reported but no fatalities.
