In Gdansk a state radio report says negotiators and some of Poland's tens of thousands of striking workers reached a common position on demands. It notes 17 strike committees are involved, with unclear worker representation, and that the agreement moves to higher government levels for final decisions to be announced later.
Reports say 40,000 workers walked out at Nowa Huta near Krakow with a first shift returning after a government agreement. The Baltic coast protests spread to Szczecin Elblag and Gdansk areas with 100,000 plus strikers, while authorities refrain from using force.
National Farmers Union president Jim Mayne says railways must not raise rates as Prairie grain shipments would suffer. He urges the government to retain Crow Benefit rates and ensure CN Rail and CP Rail serve public interest, not profit, while opposing branch-line abandonments.
Barons Oil Ltd reports a new development well nine kilometres east of Taber capable of 1440 barrels daily. Howard Oliver states the well is flowing in and awaiting production decision after an initial test not performed. The discovery follows their Canadian Superior Barons 12-1-11-16 find, with plans for at least four more wells in a 50 50 joint venture with Canadian Superior Oil Ltd and Barons holding adjacent land.
A Saudi Arabian jetliner crashed on emergency return to Riyadh, killing 265 people by flames. The flight from Karachi to Jidda had 75 percent Saudi victims, many Pakistanis returning for Eid after Ramadan. No confirmed North American passengers.
The October plebiscite will seek public opinion on financing the proposed city hall complex rather than a yes or no vote on borrowing bylaw 1980. Mayor Reinhardt said a four member committee will draft the question and a new council will decide how to proceed.
U S Defence Secretary Harold Brown warned that the Soviets either have or are near acquiring the capability to destroy U S land based missiles in their underground launch bases. He cautioned that Soviet advances in weapons power numbers and technology could threaten the U S strategic posture.
Senator Hazen Argue, minister responsible for the wheat board, asserts the federal government will honor a promised 7 million for feed and livestock transport and 60 million to help Western producers maintain herds, despite improved Prairie weather and reports of cuts to herd maintenance payments.
