British Passport Officer Kendrick Arrested by Nazis in Vienna

Captain Thomas Kendrick, British passport comptroller, was arrested in Vienna by Gestapo and held at the Metropole hotel. A British note demanded a full explanation and release, citing diplomatic immunity questions and his救 actions aiding Jewish refugees. Nazis call reserves to register in Berlin notices

Notices posted in Berlin call on all retired and reserve army officers to register with the police before September 20. White placards urged officers on leave to register as well. In Hendaye a Spanish insurgent despatch says Franco launched a general offensive with 5,000 militiamen captured and thousands killed.

Edmonton seeks more aid for relief grant

Edmonton plans to request an increase in its unemployment relief grant in aid from the Alberta government. Edmonton currently receives 53 000 and Calgary gets 60 000 with 7 100 fewer people on relief. Officials note Edmonton lists 8 986 on relief versus Calgary 7 886 in July, and Edmonton spent about 74 415 that month compared with Calgary's 82 000. A group including Edmonton Calgary Medicine Hat and Drumheller officials will meet provincial officials next week to discuss grants for the coming year.

Mackenzie Replies On Roosevelt Address

Vancouver August 19 Hon Ian Mackenzie Minister of Naval Defence said Roosevelt's Kingston speech was a gesture of deep rooted friendship between the two nations. He noted the US would not stand idly by if Canadian domination was threatened by any empire and called the address a definite spirit of friendship though not elaborating on policy effects.

Kidnapper Shot by Officer After Chase Near Effie

Otis Meridith, 21, of St Louis, died from a gunshot wound after fleeing officers who sought to question him about a kidnapping of a St Louis couple. Meridith and companion John Jeuch were trapped near Effie, Minn. Monday night and Meridith surrendered before attempting to flee.

Light Sentence In Local Cattle Theft Case

Claud Van Cleave pleaded guilty at the R C M P court to stealing a two year old heifer. He received a one year suspended sentence, ordered to pay 13.55 in costs, and return the animal to its owner T Hargrave of Walsh. The case notes the heifer drifted during a snow storm and was sold to a Lethbridge buyer who returned the branded animal J H. The magistrate cited no previous convictions and Van Cleave’s large family as factors for leniency.

Two infantile paralysis cases were reported to the health department this morning. The tally reaches three cases under treatment at the hospital, including a 13 year old local girl and a 21 year old man from Vauxhall.

Redcliff Road to be Regraded by Province Works

The Redcliff highway will be rebuilt and gravelled by the provincial Public Works department starting next Monday. 40 to 50 workers and a large crew will construct a 26 foot wide all weather road from the hilltop to Redcliff with 12 foot ditches and a flattened curve to keep it open year round. Reinforcements Rushed to Battle Arab Terrorists

In Jerusalem on August 20 British authorities imposed a 24 hour curfew on Hebron and rushed hundreds of troops to confront Arab terrorists who looted and burned the post office and Barclay's Bank. The attack marked the boldest flare of Palestine disorders as British forces deployed 80 tanks along with troops and aircraft.
