Jerry Ford captured the Republican nomination on the first ballot after a decisive win over challenger Ronald Reagan. The Kansas City scene marked a pivotal step toward the 1976 presidential race as Ford stood credited with broad party backing.
In Kansas City Ford clinched the Republican nomination on the first ballot at Kemper Arena as West Virginia's delegation cast 20 votes for Ford to 8 for Reagan, giving Ford 1,187 delegates to Reagan's 1,070 with two others. Reagan challenged Ford until the final roll call but failed to gain momentum. Betty Ford attended the arena event with her husband watching on TV from their Crown Center Hotel suite.
President Ford selected Kansas Senator Robert Dole as his Republican running mate, aiming to unite a divided party.
