Sydney linguist Professor Brian Taylor says immigrants should learn Australian swearing to fit in. He notes locals are enthusiastic swearers and new arrivals often struggle or get into trouble if they imitate the lingo. Taylor led a swearing workshop for foreign students earlier this year.
Western Canada pressure leads Ottawa to plan a 150 million dollar purchase of three Airbuses A310 for the Ministry of National Defence. Transport Minister Jean Corbeil says the buy shows support for Canadian carriers as Air Canada and Canadian Airlines discuss a merger.
Ottawa notes a weak start to 1992-93 with GST take at 1.9 billion for April–May, 751 million below a year earlier. After the $531 million low income credit, net GST revenue stands at 1.3 billion, 38 percent under 1991-92 levels. Personal and corporate tax slips compound the deficit picture as unemployment remains high.
Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa urged immediate progress as premiers met to seal a lasting Canadian constitutional accord. Premiers including Don Getty voiced skepticism while Clyde Wells urged caution and New Brunswick's Frank McKenna urged compromise. Ontario's Bob Rae defended the July 7 Senate plan as a middle ground.
In Sarajevo a crowd of nearly 1000 women and children evacuated after a mortar strike on Hotel Europe. Sgt Michael Ralph 32 of St John s Newfoundland the first Canadian killed in the Yugoslav UN mission died when his mine struck vehicle south of Daruvar Croatia. Although the hotel blaze and casualties were reported UN forces evacuated the area and Bosnian radio reported fatalities as officials noted the airfield threat. Ralph survived by wife Lorraine and two daughters aged 3 and 5.
The City of Medicine Hat filed a statement of claim in the Court of Queen's Bench seeking more than 1.3 million in damages from Stanley Associates Engineering Ltd., HBT Agra Limited, and Fedderson Engineering Ltd. for crumbling piers on the Finlay Bridge. The project cost rose to 1,339,377.16 after reencasing piers in concrete, with 75 percent funded by the province and 25 percent by the city.
Moscow says it will settle Canada grain arrears within two weeks and resume shipments. Deputy minister Yegeni Redkin blames Canada for halting sales and says Russia may look to other suppliers if payment delays persist. Canada's ambassador Michael Bell expects payment soon and hopes shipments restart. the Wheat Board notes potential loss of up to one million tonnes if unresolved.
