Reiser silver medalist at World University Games

MOSCOW AP The Soviet Union dominated track and field as nine gold medals led into today's events at the World University Games with the United States far behind. The U.S. track and field team had won a silver on Thursday by Kathy Schmidt then earned bronze on Terry Porter's pole vault third place Friday.

Thompson leads Quebec Open field with 67 at Royal Quebec

Thompson, 48, of Scarborough Ont, tamed the 6650 yard Royal Quebec Course with a five under par 67 to take a one stroke lead into the second round. A thunderstorm disrupted play with a lengthy delay and darkness halted the remainder on the 18th tee for three players. Top contenders include Ken Trowbridge at 68 and Tom Nettles, Walter Owen, and Russ Fischer one behind. Canada earns medals in track and basketball as the Soviet Union dominates. Reiser takes silver and Jones bronze in pentathlon. U S women and men post mixed results in team events.

Hockey officials respond to Alberta government report

CAHA president Jack Devine and past president Joe Kryczka dismissed a Edmonton firm's report accusing amateur hockey of enslaving players. They argued the study overstates issues, notes on player contracts, and warns against abolishing movement controls which protect leagues from being bought out by wealthier teams. Lanny MacDonald with Medicine Hat Tigers cited as example of high earnings.

Hat lawn bowlers travel to Regina for Dominion Championship

The Elsie Heller rink from Medicine Hat travels to Regina to represent Alberta in the Dominion Lawn Bowling Championships. The ladies triples team features Elsie Heller as skip with Bernice Cook and Francis Cove as teammates. The Mixed Triples title was claimed by Roland Purmal Ann Rose and Mary Cocil after defeating the Al Helps team.
