Violence erupted in Watts as police stormed the Black Muslims headquarters and arrested 52 Negroes. Eight injured by flying glass, all nonfatal, and 44 others jailed on charges of assault to murder and conspiracy amid a curfew and National Guard withdrawal.
U S marines and 7th Fleet gun crews attacked a reinforced Viet Cong regiment on the Van Tuong Peninsula about 60 miles south of Da Nang. Maj Gen Lewis Walt said Viet Cong casualties ran into the hundreds and described treacherous terrain.
In Regina a two month old baby died suspected from sleeping sickness equine encephalitis. Dr. M K Denmel said cases are rising in a wide area including Wibank Grand Coulee Regina Beach Strasbourg and Regina city with 13 suspected in isolation. In northeastern Alberta doctors seek aid as the sleeping sickness outbreak worsens with guidance to wear long sleeves use repellant and keep horses vaccinated.
In south eastern Alberta encephalitis or sleeping sickness appears to spread to horses with four suspected Medicine Hat cases. Officials report 30 cures from Peace River to Brooks. Dr. Strothers notes horses with typical symptoms. Humans can catch it via mosquitoes. health officials urge window screening insect repellent and long sleeves.
The inquiry into British Columbia voting irregularities from the 1963 federal election found nothing substantiating claims by Vancouver journalist Ormond Turner.
