Eight killed in Route 101 bus crash near San Clemente

A bus carrying 66 people from the Disciples of Christ chapel in Canoga Park crashed into seven vehicles on Highway 101 six miles south of San Clemente. Eight people died including Deborah Lee Rogers, 12, one of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans adopted children. Forty-two injured, many children, as the vehicle struck cars, a truck and other autos during a return from a charity trip to La Esperanza in Tijuana.

Mailbox explosion hits Calgary southwest area

A mailbox at 45th St and Spruce Dr S W in Calgary was blown apart at about 11 p m. Mail scattered around. a wire fragment and sulfur odor were noted. Three suspects were detained then released as police investigate the blast and await expert analysis.

U.S. advisers in Vietnam grow to six figures

Washington reports 16 500 U S advisers in South Vietnam with a further 5 000 authorized. Since Jan 1 1961 casualty lists show 181 dead from hostile action and 84 non hostile deaths, with 1 074 wounded and 18 missing. Advisers train but do not command South Vietnamese troops and operate under U S military headquarters while supporting operations.

Where is Hal Banks Montreal Sworn Return for Contempt

In Montreal police and a bailiff seek Hal Banks, former SIU Canada leader, who failed to appear in court. A bench warrant was issued and extradition could follow if he fled the country. Banks has not been seen since July 21 at his Pointe Claire home. He remains a SIU vice president despite being ousted as Canadian SIU head.

McCoy Students Lead Provincial Exam Averages

McCoy High School reports Grade XII and IX students surpass provincial passing averages at Separate School Board meeting. Among XII, 74.7 percent earned B or better from 182 papers by 48 students, well above 60 percent provincially and 36.2 percent in 1963. Honor students Marilyn Moyer and Maureen McPhee. Bursaries totaling 450 dollars awarded to Julio Esteban, John Weatherhead, Henrikus Hof and Mary Ann Dankocik for teacher training.

Ex Hatters remanded after breaking and entering case

Two former Medicine Hat youths Raymond Moser and Ralph Manary pleaded guilty to breaking and entering the offices of James Richardson and Sons Ltd in Calgary. They were remanded until August 20 for probation reports to be considered. No theft occurred as entry was made through an unlocked rear window and Moser claimed he could not recall entering the place after hours of drinking.

Soviet Agriculture Minister Visits Medicine Hat Aug 27

Soviet Agriculture Minister Ivan Volovchenko travels with seven Russian experts and a Canadian party to Medicine Hat arriving by car from Swift Current at 5 30 p m for dinner with Mayor Harry Weiner. They may head to Lethbridge or Calgary that night. The group plans a 21 day Canadian tour visiting research institutes wheat farms and farm machinery and fertilizer facilities while studying cattle keeping and feeding methods.

Soviet Premier Khrushchev flew back to Moscow from Frunze after a two week tour of the Soviet Virgin Lands and southern grain growing areas. Izvestia reported his return a week earlier than expected with no official reason given for the shortened trip.
