The beehive mound produced a mushroom cloud visible as smoke trails. Officials reported top secret results with data from seven miles of trenches and instruments up to 12 miles away.
Moscow court ends second day of trial of U 2 pilot Francis Gary Powers as his defense lawyer Mikhail Grimiov says leniency may come due to Powers behavior, repentance over the May Day flight and remorse. Powers testified he was a pilot acting under orders and not a spy, expressing regret for the incident.
Canadian Pacific Merchandise Services workers walk off in a Vancouver Island and lower mainland dispute. About 80 percent of roughly 750 workers may be idle, with 40 percent of B.C. freight tied up as Teamsters union involvement remains unclear.
Newlywed Italian couple Pasquale Spina and Louise Yorno attended a Hamilton reception with 28 guests who collapsed from food poisoning. Four hospitalized, 24 remaining at home, including three children. Health official Dr. I A Clarke said an investigation would be conducted. The couple, honeymooning in a sickbed, plan another Niagara visit later in summer.
In Rollphton near Rolphton Ontario a damaged electrical system at the NPD project damaged Aug 2. Edward M Norrena of North Bay Ontario faced mischief charges and was remanded until Sept 1. James Curtis of Canadian Bechtel Ltd testified that cutting two wires could disrupt the reactor control panel and circuit breaker.
Democratic nominee John Kennedy secured his first major victory as Congress reconvened. The Senate defeated a proposal to roll back new worker coverage in Kennedy’s minimum wage bill, with 56 to 39 votes. Kennedy’s plan would raise the wage to 1.25 dollars in three stages and extend coverage to about 5 million workers.
The former Soviet diplomat Sergei Kudryavtsev, 52, arrived in Havana as Russian ambassador to Cuba amid a welcoming ceremony. He previously served as first secretary in Ottawa during the Gouzenko spy revelations. Ottawa had no official confirmation that he is the same individual later named to the Cuban post.
Manila reports flood waters are receding after weeks of monsoon rain. A provincial official, surveying the devastated area, fears hundreds of bodies may be found. At least 42 dead with many injured or missing across three central Luzon provinces.

The incident at Coquilhatville airport lasted about 12 minutes as machine gunners forced troops to lie face down. Ghanaian forces later surrounded the Canadians and took them to quarters. Taschereau was examined at a Congolese clinic before transfer to Leopoldville.

Professor Hubertus Strughold, space medicine adviser at Brooks Air Force Base, said a brief flight to the moon poses fewer problems than an eight month Mars mission. He cited need for sunglasses, blood pressure checks, oxygen, and noted weightlessness may require only hour and a half sleep.
