Demonstrators in Goa were arrested while marching on the tiny territory. Police clashes left 15 Indians dead and 24 injured as Calcutta faced shutdowns and riots spread across the country. Governor General Paulo Guedes said Portugal would negotiate for peaceful coexistence but rejected territory transfer.
Megalta Potteries Ltd directors approve a lease with Marwell Ltd for the potteries division at the local plant. Approval by the Royal Bank of Canada is awaited before signing. If cleared, Marwell will use the division to produce new lines of pottery and dinnerware, with about 20 workers to start and expansion as production grows.
About 6 000 scouts arrive in Niagara-on-the-Lake for the eighth World Jamboree Aug 20 28 with expectations of 9 000 to 10 000 in camp. Contingents from 57 countries will join pageants displays and exhibits across 10 sub camps including Pacific BC Alberta and Curacao Newfoundland and Labrador. Maj Gen Dan Spry praises Canadian preparations as scouts build native huts and perform tom tom dances.
In the National League Brooklyn beat New York 8 to 5 with Bessent the winning pitcher and Hoak homering for Brooklyn. Chicago topped Cincinnati 6 to 2 as Minner took the loss. In the American League Kansas City defeated Chicago 6 to 2 with Herbert and Astroth driving in runs for Kansas City.
A light westerly flow of warm dry air will prevail over Alberta and Western Saskatchewan today and Friday. This will result in fine sunny weather.
Progressive Conservative leader George Drew accused the government of confusion on cabinet policy for natural gas pipelines and uranium purchases. He cited unclear plans from Trans-Canada Pipe Lines on Alberta gas to eastern Canada and criticized handling of food surpluses and butter and wheat sales to Czechoslovakia and Poland. Drew planned a nationwide tour to press issues from Parliament's last session.
A cement shortage across the country has slowed work on the new municipal district hospital. W B McQueen, chairing the building committee, said prospects look fair to resume full-scale operations as supply houses confer. Winnipeg Regina and Edmonton face grave shortages with priority allocations. Medicine Hat hospital will get high priority.
In Buenos Aires protests flare as anti government demonstrators clash with Peron followers for the third straight day. Interior Minister Oscar Albrieu accuses seven priests of inciting disobedience and says names will be sent to church authorities. He warns toleration has limits and hints at resuming a political campaign against church leaders while upholding a policy of pacification after June’s revolt.

Wayne Baker of Toronto dies after a pack of fourteen farm dogs maul him while he tries to stop them from attacking his pet. He wandered from a summer home at Matthiasville and was found in a bushes clump on a neighboring farm. Owner Vera MacDonald was away briefly. upon return she saw the dogs and later found the boy’s arm, leading to hospital admittance and fatal transfusions failure. The incident follows other dog attack deaths in Canada and the U.S. including cases in Quebec City, Flin Flon, Eileen Texas, Grand Rapids Manitoba, and Anchorage Alaska.
Alberta MLA Harry E. Strom of Burdett urged government funding to connect district highways in Cypress riding with Medicine Hat area. In his maiden legislature speech, Strom pressed for improvements to the Manyberries Sterling road and irrigation expansion to boost southern agriculture. The throne speech included Producer Marketing Boards push, with Agriculture committee to discuss next Monday.
John Carman Hopk ins, a former farm boy turned reporter, completed a record long distance swim across Calgary’s Bowness Lagoon amid calm water and playful chaos. He battled fountain obstacles, sinking twice, and guidance from Coach Gorde Hunter before finishing strong. The feat follows enduring swimmers like Marilyn Bell and Flo Chadwick, who trained for records rather than improvising on site. Hopkins says he did it for the money as a crowd of children and a dog cheered ashore.
A Calgary court sentenced Roy Berg of Medicine Hat to seven years total on seven forgery charges, to run concurrently after cashing 236 in worthless cheques forged as Calgary Iron Works. Police still pursue two youths who passed phony cheques to six Hat firms on August 12, with several major merchants hit for over 500 dollars.
A 35-year-old Summerland hairdresser Laura Ouillette was pulled from Okanagan Lake at noon after a 15 hour bid to swim 35 miles from Kelowna to Penticton. She covered only 14 miles before being rescued in a report from Victoria.
An 18 year old Lethbridge bank teller William Charles Fazakereley, sought in connection with a 30000 dollar bank theft, has voluntarily returned to Vancouver from Mexico. He was apprehended on arrival by plane and will be escorted back to Lethbridge to face charges.
Alberta’s official Jubilee Day set for August 31 in Medicine Hat after a council and Retail Merchants Association conference. Businesses to close that day to honor the province’s 50th birthday, with celebrations continuing September 1 including baby and couple gifts and a silver spoon for new residents.
