Regina August 18 One million dollars in crop and property damage is reported after a fierce wind and hail storm swept central Saskatchewan at midnight Friday. A mile a minute gale ripped a hundred mile course across the Last Mountain country, flattening crops and gardens four to eight miles wide. Barns sheds and garages were smashed.
Gordon McKenzie a temporary Labatt brewery worker died in Victoria hospital of a fractured skull after being found last night on a London street. Crown Prosecutor Newton said death unrelated to kidnapping and city detectives were on the case. In Detroit Frahm noted Canada border kidnappings are not uncommon and Labatt rumors spread about John Labatt. Authorities referenced ransom questions and rest for John Labatt as police and legal officials weighed best course.
In southwestern Alberta, more than 50 square miles burned across Castle Yarrow Dry Fork and Carpenter Creek valleys. About 200 firefighters aided by night rain and light snow, with Twin Butte in Waterton River valley declared safe and no private property lost.
In New York on August 18 a convention of the United Textile Workers of America voted to strike 325000 workers in woollen and worsted silk rayon and synthetic rayon knitteries. The body also authorized strikes in allied cotton textile industries where 500000 workers are employed. The vote was by large majority though not unanimous.
In Santiago on Friday a group armed with a submachine gun tried to halt F O Tobin, Royal Bank of Canada manager, en route to the city from W Holgun with 40000 dollars. The attackers fired on Tobin's car wounding the bank assistant auditor and a soldier guard. Tobin's chauffeur sped away with the wounded and escaped.
In Hussar district, Mrs. Johnnie Rutskey died at Bassano hospital from injuries after an incident Monday night on her farm. While milking, a steer frightened, dragging rope around her body and causing spinal injury with paralysis and internal damage. She died Wednesday after being moved Tuesday. She had been married six months.
TORONTO Aug 18 Harry C Hatch prominent distiller and sportsman refused to discuss a report he had been threatened by supposed kidnappers and directed his secretary to say there is absolutely nothing in the story Hatch viewed the rumours as a hoax coming after the John Labatt kidnapping coverage and sparking interest.

London August 18 The World Wheat Conference failed to reach a day on export quotas but officially accepted 600 million bushels as the estimated world demand for the crop year starting this month. The figure may rise due to animal feed shortages and possible use of wheat stocks for feed.
R. H. Askew a 28 year old North Carolina evangelist walked into the Nashville police station and said he had been in kidnappers hands since last Tuesday. He reported three abductors took his clothes in Washington and drove him around the country until about daylight this morning when they dumped him near Nashville.
A strong quake struck the Nagoya district near central Japan just before noon. No casualties were reported. Communications to the north were cut briefly but restored. Rail tunnels and bridges were damaged and Kyoto was heavily shaken.
The mixed chorus of David Bearspaws band of Stoney Indians won the tri angular singing contest at the first Indian days concert in Banff Alberta on the grounds of the Banff Springs Hotel. Nat Hunter led the Chinequay choir to second place while Joshua Wildman and his West-Ley band finished last.

In Laval sur le Lac on August 18 C R Hany Somerville of London Ontario and Albert Scotty Campbell of Seattle were tied at half time in a 36 hole Canadian amateur golf championship match after both shooting 72s in the first 18. Somerville and Campbell each posted 36 for the second 18 bringing the match to 72-72. They will play an additional 18 holes this afternoon with Campbell gaining a slight edge on the inward nine.
Archibald H. Sinclair 62 a Moose Jaw resident since 1905 died after a month long illness in a local hospital. A prominent ship and member of the Moose Jaw Curling Club he was known across Saskatchewan for his curling involvement. Born in Tiverton Ontario he moved to the United States at nine then to Saskatchewan in 1905 living in Tuxford before moving to Moose Jaw in 1914 to supervise Sask Elevator Company operations.
Sacramento police traced a letter seized from local Communist sympathizers naming James Cagney as having given radical movement financial support. Cagney in Hollywood denied today that he aided the Communists as suggested by police report contents.
At the Oval in London Aug 18 Australia opened the fifth and final test versus England with 475 runs for two wickets. W H Ponsford and Don Bradman combined for a record second innings stand of 451, surpassing their own 388 run fourth wicket record set at Leeds in July.
Glasgow August 18 results show Aberdeen beat Falkirk 1 0 and Clyde won 2 1 against Dunfermline. Hearts and Celtic drew 0 0 while Queen's Park defeated St Mirren 4 1. Rangers edged Motherwell 1 0 and St Johnstone beat Airdrieonians 4 1 with other scores noted.
President Roosevelt today asked Hugh Johnson to work out a full A. A. reorganization and to implement it. The request signals a major overhaul initiative aimed at reorganizing government finance and administration. Johnson is expected to draft the plan and oversee its execution once approved.
Victoria reports the price spreads and mass buying inquiry will resume this fall. Hon H H Stevens minister of trade and commerce said criticisms came from sources feeling targeted. He urged fairness and said business should put its house in order for the sake of the economy.
Andrew Aird of Sioux Lookout Ont was killed when a gust ripped the roof off a box car on a Canadian Pacific freight train. Archie McDermid of Vancouver was seriously injured as the car sped along during Friday’s dust storm.
Aug. 18 report from BLEC Yugoslavia states King Alexander invites Prince George to visit his summer palace to discuss a marriage plan. The reputed match would pair the British King’s fourth son with Princess Marina, 27, daughter of Prince Nicholas and Princess Olga of Greece.
A high wind event at about 8 pm caused property and garden damage across the city. A garage roof blew off at 54 Fourth Street and a fire small blaze was quickly extinguished after wires shorted. Trees and fences fell, Cypress Hills area reports no danger, and Chief Ranger G Ambrose says conditions are under control. In Granary, Norman Smith, missing since the dust storm Friday, was found in a field granary near his Pine Coulee home clutching his lunch.
Alberta figures show direct provincial relief totaled 1 510 600 for the year ended March 31 1934. Of this 339 372 funded unemployment relief commissions to aid single homeless men operating camps and soup kitchens in urban centres.
