President Harding told Congress he would use all government power to maintain transportation and protect workers' rights to work. He urged legislation to cure industrial ills and insisted that employers and employees may set their business methods and relations, while government by law remains intact amid any hardships.
Calgary August 17 After a full day of talks coal operators issued an amended offer endorsed by the labor minister. They accept pre strike working conditions and a 20 percent wage cut while awaiting settlement in eighty percent of US mines. The offer matches the miners demand except retroactivity is rejected.
Toronto August 18 J A Elis provincial fuel controller told a conference of about 120 Ontario municipal representatives that immediate cooperative action with coal dealers will prevent a real coal famine this winter. He urged Welsh coal purchases as a key measure and cited railway efficiency changes in Brockville.
Hamilton reporters state two new infantile paralysis cases emerged in the past two hours, bringing total cases to fifty with six deaths. Officials view the outbreak as not serious and expect few additional victims.
Enclosed in a small white casket rescuers recovered remains of the right little victims of the Jewish Boys' Home fire at Shawbridge. The bodies were interred in Mount Royal cemetery this afternoon.

San Diego August 18. Lt W T Larsen Army aviator may have set a 1 100 mile air record from San Antonio to San Diego flying with two stops at El Paso and Nogales. He left Kelly field at 5 30 am and reached Rockwell field at 4 pm after maintaining a pace over 100 mph in the air.
Fire caused about 75000 dollars in damage when the Ritchie Bros sawmill at Alvymer Quebec burned on Wednesday.
Montreal August 17 At a meeting of the Grand Trunk Railway board W D Robb was named ranking vice president and general manager. He succeeds president Howard G Kelley who resigned yesterday. Robb is the first native-born Canadian to head the Grand Trunk and the first chief executive who rose from an apprenticeship with unbroken service. He was born in 1857 at Longwell Quebec and educated at Sherbrooke Academy and St Francois College Richmond Quebec.
One hundred fifty Creek picture brides arrived today from Piraeus and expected to meet their future husbands and be married at once. The girls said conditions were so bad at home they were glad to come and risk marrying virtual strangers.

In New York on August 17 three hundred bottles of whiskey shipped in egg crates were seized at the Manhattan Malt Shop 99 East Second Street. Samuel Cohen of Madison Avenue and Otto Braun of East Second Street were taken into custody. Braun, the alleged owner, and Cohen accused of negotiating a sale for 47 dollars per crate of 12 quarts. Lethbridge reports another Sunburst Kevin area oil well coming in. The Abell well lies about five miles east of Kevin and south of the Sunburst field on the Shelby road. The discovery, though not yet authenticated by direct wire, is described as drilling into sands last night with casing at 600 feet.

Chester Coonfare a 16 year old Indiana farm boy refused to give up his plan to cross Canada to visit Prince Albert. After being sent back to the United States he declared his aim to ride bumpers to Detroit and try Windsor next. He showed ragged clothes and a skull cap made from a stocking.
Kaladar August 18. When attempting to halt a runaway team, 40 year old 8S. H. Drnsdale proprietor of the Wickwire House at Clyne 34 miles north was struck down and killed.
