Paris reports that Polish forces based in Thorn cleared the Danzig corridor of Russian troops and continued advancing eastward. In Minsk, Soviet peace terms were shown to Polish delegates and the Polish reply was to be returned to Olsey.
In Thorold Ontario on August 17 a mob stormed the town hall where Dan McNeal faced murder charges in the July 14 death of four year old Margaret Boucock. Pressure from townspeople and a proffered plea from McNeal halted lynching as he spoke from the library steps, then was escorted to safety. damage to the hall reached thousands. Local mariners reported slug damage to Niagara fruit belt cherries and pears as the episode ended without further violence.
Vancouver reports a wholesale sugar price decline of one dollar per hundred for all grades. In Oshawa, Ontario, lineman Charles W. Wilman of the Hydro Electric Power Commission died after an accidental contact with a live wire while repairing a transformer.
Mexico City August 17 Attorney M G Villers of the Transcontinental Company and Rodolfo Montes of the Eagle Company a British owned concern have been named by the foreign affairs as a committee on publicity following a flood of government statements on Mexican petroleum legislation. The oil question attracts attention though it is believed final action on what foreign oil interests call Carranza s confiscatory measures will be left to the administration elected September 5.
Bert Adams of Issa township, aged 87 and unmarried, died in Barrie Ontario after suffering burns while refilling his car’s gasoline tank the previous Sunday. He was the son of Alv Adams and Mrs Thomas Adams.
Paris reports the French government will protest Reginald Tower’s decision as Danzig forbids further debarkation of French munitions for Poland. The Allied high commissioner’s ruling was issued yesterday and drew the protest.
Windsor reports 67 inmates in the county jail at Sandwich, about double capacity. Most are O T A violators. Cots and hammocks fill spaces as officials seek temporary beds, with six hour sleeping relays possible if beds cannot be found. London dispatch cites Warsaw holding firm as of Monday’s official communiqué denying reports that Warsaw fell Sunday. The Times notes the Bolshevik claim originated from Vilna and was disputed by Warsaw authorities.

Trandas Ont Aug 18 County Magistrate Hunt ruled a summer cottage used by more than one family is not a private dwelling under the Ontario Temperance Act. He fined a Hamilton man named OConnor who ordered liquor to his Port Stanley summer home occupied with another family. The magistrate suggested an appeal.
A deputation led by I J Dixon urged Ottawa officials to back Winnipeg strike leaders jailed for aiding the general strike. They argued Winnipeg’s election showed public support for the imprisoned men and denied sedition. Ministers Robertson and Guthrie received the delegation to present the case for cabinet discussion.
