Dr. Mikhail Antonovich Klotchko, a Stalin Prize laureate, asked for asylum in Canada and received government approval to stay. The RCMP confirmed the 14 hour meeting with Soviet officials and said he remains in protective custody in Ottawa. The Soviet embassy sought to contact him while officials kept details secret.
A Soviet source told Southam News that Dr Mikhail Antonovich Klotchko arrived in Canada as a private tourist, not as part of the official Montreal Congress on Chemistry delegation. The source said he wasn’t known to the Soviet Embassy and had no contact with USSR officials, calling him a madman and citing his wife’s death as a factor in deteriorating mind.
Eastern Air Lines Electra hijacked over Florida by a Castro sympathizer was flown back from Havana where it was impounded since July 24. Captain William Buchanan of Miami piloted the $2.5 million aircraft to Havana under threat of being shot and then brought it back. A $50,000 Cuban patrol boat exchanged for the airliner departed Key West for Cuba.
East Germany urges 1 700 000 youth members to join the army as Berlin tensions rise over refugee blockades. Western powers accuse Soviet backed measures of violating four power status. Calls for dawn meetings and political rallies echo across schools factories and farms.
Edmonton restaurateur Mitch Klimore will pay a $14 tab if any customer eats a 72 ounce steak within an hour. A Louisiana doctor accomplished the feat about three months ago, the only winner since the offer began eight years ago. A Calgary rival withdrew a similar challenge after a customer did it in six years.
A massive fire at Botwood’s waterfront destroyed three piers three large sheds and six homes as flames spread to a 25 000 ton newsprint shed. Two crewmen of the Norwegian ship Artensis are missing while the ship carried 3 000 tons of newsprint bound for New York. The blaze raged three hours, with smoke and 70 foot flames visible as responders fought to prevent further spread.
Eastern Newfoundland faced scattered showers as crews fought burning spruce and fir across Bona Vista North and Trinity Bay. Evacuees returned home on lighter outbreaks while helicopters and water bombers battled inland fires on the Bay de Verde peninsula and near Glenwood, where timely drops slowed a major flare up.

Walter Piotrowski, 52, of Ajax, left Oshawa for Ajax with his 11 year old son Danny joining at midpoint. Piotrowski began in Montreal August 3 to mark his left knee loss in a 1932 carnival accident.
Cattle and calves exported to the United States from Union stockyards in St Boniface Manitoba topped 10 000 head in July up from about 1 000 a year earlier. A spokesman cited drought and strong export demand with US buyers attracted by lower Canadian prices. He predicted the trend would continue for several weeks.
The Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association passed a resolution calling for immediate implementation of the royal commission on publications. The panel led by Grattan O'Leary recommended measures to shield Canadian publications from U S periodicals, including stopping deductions of advertising expenses by Canadian advertisers in foreign periodicals aimed at Canada.

Hamilton longshoremen voted 71 to 2 to end a month long strike that halted over seas shipping. About 150 workers will return to work under wage terms negotiated by the International Longshoremen’s Association and the strikebound stevedoring firms.
The F-1 rocket engine, planned for the Nova moon vehicle and key to the U S moon landing effort, burned only 10 seconds before automatic shutdown due to a damaged fuel valve switch from engine vibration. Officials noted it produced 1 000 000 pounds of thrust in that brief run, far short of the planned 1 500 000.
In Prince George district two large blazes escaped fireguards increasing to over 60 000 acres as heat and dryness threatened new flare ups. The Grove fire east of Prince George and the Tsus fire southeast of town jumped containment with crews seeking safety and additional firefighting strength sought as 87 fires burn across the province with 3958 firefighters on peak duty.
