Approve Road Work in Med. Hat District

Dr. J. L. Robinson announced government approval of road assistance in a provincial municipal program. Mayor Telford Joins Vancouver Police Commission

Vancouver mayor Lyle Telford was sworn as chair of the police commission eight months after becoming chief magistrate. The commission includes the mayor, a police magistrate, and a county court judge as members. Woman Killed As Warship Formidable Is Launched

In Belfast Today the aircraft carrier Formidable burst its supporting cradle during launch, causing a runaway entry into Belfast Lough. One woman, Mrs Isabel Kirk, was killed by debris and about 20 spectators injured. Lady Wood christened the ship as it began to move. The Formidable carries over 60 planes and 16 4.5 inch guns.

U S Cotton Deal in Government Hands

Secretary Henry Wallace announced the government would take title to more than half of 11,000,000 bales of cotton held under loan to growers to support the cotton rubber exchange with Britain. The Commodity Credit Corporation will extend loans on a 1938 crop cotton for one year to July 1, 1940.

Alberta oil could find huge Britain market via feasible pipeline

Calgary August 17 Fred eric Hudd chief Canadian trade commissioner in the United Kingdom said there is an unlimited market for Alberta oil in Great Britain if a pipeline to Fort William Ontario or Vancouver is made accessible.
