Cockburn also wins best video for Call It Democracy. Luba rises to best female vocalist. Images in Vogue takes group of the year and best single for In The House. Junos also honors Siberry for 1985. The event is CBC televised from the Kingwood Music Theatre.
Alberta Premier Don Getty said he will personally appeal to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney for quick action to end the petroleum and gas revenue tax. Federal Energy Minister Marcel Masse seeks talks with Alberta and Saskatchewan officials on a federal provincial aid package to aid the industry and workers. Webber says a weekend meeting is unlikely but a later talks plan is in motion as the tax faces possible death.
A West German sea captain, Wolfgang Bindel, rejected charges that 155 Tamils were smuggled across the Atlantic aboard the Aurigae. Tamils drifted in lifeboats off Newfoundland. authorities say 93 were sent to Montreal and 61 to Toronto with one hospitalised.
Prime Minister Mulroney will unveil a $36.1 million Pointe Noire port near Sept Îles. Documents show the project was political, not need based, with total traffic forecast to fall from 20 million tonnes in 1983 to 17 million by 1990. The old facility remains in use as traffic declines.
A six year old, Tammy, wandered on a mountainside trail in Banff, Alberta, cried for help after losing sight of a nearby trail and was heard by hikers from a parking area. Rescue crews located her with no serious injuries after a tense search.
