Calgary transit workers rejected a city wage offer by 80 percent and pushed a counterproposal to be voted on by union members later today. If the proposal fails, Mayor Harry Hays may seek approval to hire 400 replacement drivers.
The Dominion Bureau of Statistics reported a wheat carryover of 523.2 million bushels on July 31, down 14.4 million from a year earlier, with 89.4 million on farms. Total five major grains carryover is about 738.76 million, three percent below last year and two percent under the 10 year average. Agriculture Minister Alvin Hamilton said exports up to July 31 should reach 354 million bushels, noting drought could reduce Prairie wheat to around 240 million, affecting domestic needs, seed needs and export stocks.
Ottawa reports a second hard contract within the 2% year general agreement may be lined up as a grain mission to Canada from Red China could inspect grain grading and handling facilities. The mission may have authority to place more orders, following two preexisting orders worth about 64 million dollars and a first contract for 186.7 million bushels of wheat and 46.7 million bushels of barley.

He urged Western representatives to visit Berlin, warned the East German crisis could spread to the Rhine, and called for economic sanctions and free East German elections.
In Thessalon Ontario provincial police and volunteers recovered the bodies of four Bussineau brothers aged 4 to 8 from Mashagama Lake after their father's boat capsized in strong winds. The father survived. Mrs Bussineau and another son were treated for shock in Sault Ste. Marie.
A California woman admitted the 17 day kidnapping tale was false. Clara Bell Roderick, 23, from San Mateo, said she left home due to marital trouble and staged the trip with two men and a woman in Phoenix before arriving in Houston. No charges were filed.
Calgary report describes Bernie Aisenstat withdrawing a 72-ounce steak promotion after customer Philip Washburn finished the mammoth meal within an hour. Washburn, 20, completed the steak with sides and dessert, prompting the proprietor to end the gimmick after six years in business.
Lincoln mourns Snip the charity dog as his coffin rests beside owner Henry Tyler in the cathedral city. The dog raised nearly £5000 for flood victims dinners for the aged and Hungarian refugees after 1956. Snip died of old age after 14 years of fund raising.
A light plane crashed during takeoff near Locust Hill Toronto area, killing four aboard. Victims include pilot J Wesley Harper of Aurora, Ontario, his wife My, and Mrs. Wilfred Chafen and Mrs. Ken Chafen of Green River, Ontario. Harper was an experienced pilot and WWII RCAF veteran.

A Canadian Pacific Airlines Bristol Britannia aircraft ran off its brakes during service at Montreal International Airport and slid 200 feet into a hangar causing about 50 000 in damage. No passengers were aboard. one flight attendant was shaken but not hospitalized. The plane had been in Montreal a day and a half and was to fly to Mexico City before being replaced with no delay.
A Toronto messenger Emery Cosman, 60, found a cashier's cheque for 3 million dollars on Bay Street. The cheque from Guaranty Trust Company to Bank of Montreal, handed to another firm, was returned. Cosman treated it as a joke until recognizing a signature and said he would act the same if it were cash.
