Alberta Cabinet Holds Session on Dominion Request

Premier Aberhart opened a cabinet meeting in Edmonton as Alberta prepared only a rough outline of its reply to the Dominion government's co operation request. The agenda included banking legislation reference to the Supreme Court of Canada with a tentative outline to be finalized later. G. I. Rebels push into Reinosa in fierce Franco battle

In Aug 16 dispatches insurgent troops pushed into the northern manufacturing belt of Reinosa in a brutal battle as government forces retreated. General Franco's men advanced toward Santander's northern area and fought door to door, claiming an entire battalion captured while five government battalions fled. Santander, about 40 miles southeast, remains the north coast’s last major stronghold.

Pilot Waagen Landed Forcedly Near Dawson Creek Safe

Edmonton August 15 uninjured pilot Leonard Waagen aged 24 was forced to land his air mail plane in rough terrain ten miles south of Dawson Creek B C after a 33 hour disappearance. He was found by British Columbia police and brought to Dawson Creek. The plane was badly damaged and 50 pounds of mail survived. Storms across the Northland halted most aviation as search plans, including Ralphi Oakes, were canceled after Waagen's recovery.

Rockyford Burglars Sentenced In Calgary

In Calgary on August 14, Wesley Biz card, released after a year, was sent to Prince Albert penitentiary for two years after robbery in Rockyford. Douglas McNair of Calgary got one year. Charles Young of Toronto, nicknamed the softy, was freed but must report to police monthly for two years.

Edmonton Man Killed in Spanish Civil War

Edmonton reports the first local fatality in the Spanish Civil War. Jack Bloom, 24, a worker with the Edmonton Single Unemployed Protective Association, was killed by machine-gun fire while fighting for government forces near Albacete in early July.

UAW plans Windsor Ford plant union drive next week

United Automobile Workers of America will start a unionization push in Windsor Ford Motor Co of Canada plants.
