About 600 firefighters from a wide area fought a Tuesday evening blaze near Elka water cake forest, four cottages burned by noon, and villagers feared wider destruction. Women volunteers supplied food and drink as winds stayed calm overnight. By morning, authorities said the fire was under control if winds remain calm for two hours.
A 200 strong volunteer force joined Royal Canadian Mounted Police led by Corps J. W. Barnes and Constable Barney Crockett to battle a spreading blaze along Thelma road. Firefighters cut back brush, hauled debris, and kept a six mile front under intense glare as food and rest were organized by local women. Two ranch fires remained under control later. injuries were minor and fevers of fatigue persisted after long watches.

Los Angeles August 9 a p says Captain William F Hynes testified at a closed congressional hearing that large contributions to the Communist party are coming from noted Hollywood film players. Hynes did not name the actors nor elaborate on the charge.
Wilbert Robinson 74, president of the Atlanta Baseball Club of the Southern Association and former Brooklyn Dodgers manager, died at 10:30 p.m. after a brain hemorrhage. A famed former Baltimore Orioles player, he retired as Dodgers manager and lived at Dover Hall in Georgia.
Wellington officials released the annual rail revenue report showing a rise of £235,000 over the previous year. Total revenue reached £1,985,000 for the year ending last March, up from £850,000 the year before, with increases across all headings.

President Roosevelt issued an executive order under the Silver Purchase Act of 1934 directing mints to receive any and all silver in the United States. The order fixes a national price of 50.01 cents per ounce and requires delivery within 90 days, with exceptions for silver mined before December 21, 1933.
On August 9 officials halted silver futures trading after President Roosevelt announced nationalization of the metal. Spot quotes near 490 cents an ounce preceded the move, while Winnipeg grain figures followed with highest closes since July 1933 and May options near one dollar. A stew of pemmican aged over eighty years was cooked at William Campbell’s Bowden district farm in Calgary. The dried buffalo meat remained rock hard in a cache found during plowing. Campbell said the stew tasted like meat and retained some original flavor.
A judicial party led by Magistrate O W Douglas prepared to open the trial of Ahigiak, charged with killing Aniruak in autumn 1981 near Coppermine N W T. The accused is held under close supervision and housed in an igloo as there is no jail at Coppermine.
Albert Helmer 76 of Calgary died while visiting California. A pioneer surveyor of Western Canada he served as federal grazing supervisor for Alberta for three years. Born in Russell Ontario he came west in 1880 and helped fix the Alberta Saskatchewan boundary in 1881.
The Edmonton Board of Health asks Alberta Taxation Inquiry Board to recommend free tuberculosis treatment for all residents funded by general provincial taxes. The plan mirrors Saskatchewan’s program, which reportedly reduced TB cases after two years.
Ontario Liquor Control Board commissioner Edmund G. Odette said today that separate beverage rooms for women will be ordered to prevent drinking by men and women together in public. Women will be allowed to bring their escorts. they will not be allowed to enter the men's rooms.

John Sullivan age 60 was instantly killed by lightning while seated near a radio at a Memillare coal mine house one mile west of Castor Alberta. The bolt followed the aerial destroyed the radio and struck him on the back of the head. Omar Remillard two feet away was uninjured and the house sustained slight damage.
Montreal August 10 Judge F Calder of Ashcroft British Columbia urged creation of special courts for domestic relations cases. He said this branch of justice needs trained judges and expert handling, with segregation to provide experts in mis demeanor matters.
J H Mackay of Saskatoon told the Toronto gathering the Saskatchewan Teachers Alliance dissolved due to poor crops. Salaries fell from 1000 to 400 dollars with 2000 members in 1931 dropping to 600 by 1933. A Saskatchewan Teachers Federation is being formed amid vast crop losses across 90 000 square miles.
Lillian Rosenfelt a 60 year old eccentric lived in two basement rooms in New York and saved $60,000 in a bank. She avoided rent by pleading poverty and survived on scraps from restaurant tables and dumbwaiters.
